Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead

Well, the years start comin' and they don't stop comin'
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground runnin'
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb
So much to do, so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the backstreets?
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow

Hey now, you're an all star
Get your game on, go play
Hey now, you're a rock star
Get the show on, get paid
(And all that glitters is gold)
Only shootin' stars break the mold

Arco
Arco is a dynamic tactical RPG set in a beautiful pixelated world in which your choices shape the world and your characters.

Story

There are three different tales that you experience slowly throughout the game but all three stories follow the same goal: Taking revenge on the red company which has been ruining the peaceful world of Arco in many ways.

All playable characters of Arco are different and come with somewhat unique gameplay styles.
The story itself is straight forward but enjoyable. Is it predictable? Yeah, probably but all the choices you make as a player will have an impact on your character and potentially make the game harder or easier.

Personal Note

I was very excited to get my hands on Arco ever since I saw the first trailers and playing the demo of it earlier this year made me even more excited for it.

Arco is a neat game and it took me about 12 hours to complete my first playthrough and I probably missed a few things considering that people on the steam forum talked about something that I wasn’t quite aware yet, also, looking at my achievements after finishing the game for the first time, leads me to believe that Arco could need two playthroughs to really see and experience everything it has to offer.

The combat is one of the main gameplay loops this game has and it’s semi tactical and reminds me a lot of Super Hot. You can plan ahead your moves in a tactical manner but as soon as you move, everyone and everything is moving too which makes the combat very dynamic. Despite the combat being fluent it can be somewhat frustrating – let me explain: You can win most combat encounters by kiting the enemies around since you have to spend mana to attack but you regenerate it by moving around or waiting. Some of the characters have ranged attacks which makes the combat quite easy but some characters have melee attacks which makes the combat a bit harder because kiting without getting hit is a bit harder.

This will get better later on because the more experience points you get from combat, or other events that you will encounter while exploring in Arco, the more active and passive skills you will unlock.

On the flipside, if you have more characters in your posse, you can move them individually during combat and you can combine some of the attacks with each other which leads to lethal outcomes most of the time.

Another side of the combat is the little ghosts that start popping up here and there. Those ghosts are your manifested guilt that move during the tactical phase of the combat which makes it a bit more hectic since they attack you while the combat is paused.

The idea of having such a mechanic is nice but there are situations in which having such a mechanic is more annoying than anything else, especially during Act 3. I’m not sure if you could commit to a complete evil playthrough of Arco because the manifested guilt might just overwhelm you eventually.

What is combat without boss fights, eh? Well, fighting bosses are mostly just okay. They are nothing special and that’s fine. Some bosses take a few tries because of the length or because you messed up crucial things but you will be able to beat them eventually without sweating too much.

The exploration portion of Arco is minimalistic but it works well. You move from map to map and most maps have some secret stashes that you can loot.

The dialogue is good. The story is decent. The pixel graphics are pretty and the soundtrack is an absolute banger in it’s own way.

Rating
    Pros
  • Nice story
  • Great pixel graphics and aesthetics
  • Awesome soundtrack
  • Fluid and dynamic combat
  • Combat with multiple characters feels good
    Cons
  • Combat can be frustrating
  • Boss fights are just okay
Conclusion

Is Arco worth to pick up? I would say so yes. You get at least 12 hours of content for 17,99€ which is a fair deal in my opinion, especially since you can play through it again because I’m sure you probably missed out on a few things in your first playthrough.

The story of the game combined with the combat and the simplicity of the movement and exploration just makes this a very nice and special game. Arco is a little gem with a tiny number of flaws and I’m glad that I’ve played it.

Monster Train
Monster Train is roguelike deck building game in which you are on a train that is heading towards hell.

Gameplay

Is Monster Train just another roguelike deck building game? Not really.

The twist of Monster Train is somewhat unique since you have a total of three lanes that you are defending from incoming enemies. Usually, without special modifier or boss abilities, the enemies will start on the first floor and will, if you don’t defeat them, continue going up until they reach your pyre. You lose when your pyre hits zero health points, so you better make sure to defend it with everything you have.

There are different factions that each come with a unique playstyle, their own units and champions as well as spells and you have to mix those well since you usually combine two factions with each other which gives the game more depth and a bunch of combo potential.

There is a total of three big and a handful of smaller bosses that you need to defeat to win.

Personal Note

Now, I’m probably not the only one that instantly thought of other roguelike card games that seem to be released in endless waves ever since Slay the Spire popularized this genre and you are probably right to think of games like Slay the Spire, Inscryption, Banners of Ruin or Across the Obelisk since they all have something in common: Roguelike and roguelite games mix well with deck building & card games and that applies to Monster Train as well.

The game was recommended to me by a friend and during the last Steam summer sale I finally pulled the trigger & bought it and it hooked me instantly. The art-style, the music, the somewhat unique gameplay and the fact that you can make battles harder for more resources from the get go is just an overall plus in my book.

Something else that is positive is that the text of abilities is clear to read and super easy to understand which means that people that are new to roguelike card games will have a good time from the very beginning while people that have been playing similar games might instantly cook up great combinations.

After every battle you can decide on which things to go for.
For example, on the left lane, there might be a merchant that lets you upgrades spells, a random event field and you get a unit for your main faction and on the right lane, there is a merchant that lets you upgrade units, a merchant that offers artifacts and a field that lets you choose a unit from your supporting faction.

After every bigger boss fight, you can choose between some upgrades for your pyre and you get to upgrade your champion as well.

There’s something negative that I want mention: Some buffs and debuffs are just a bit unfair to deal with. If the randomness is on your side, you might build up insanely good combinations that can fall flat almost instantly in certain encounters. The sab and frostbite effects are just very strong and can be hard to deal with at times; although it’s a very good thing when your enemies have endless stacks of frostbite on them – it goes both ways obviously.

The soundtrack fits to the rest of the game and the art style just goes well with all the monsters and champions of the game.

There is a multiplayer mode called “Hell Rush” but I haven’t tried it out so I’m not sure how good or how much fun it is. I usually just go for normal or daily challenge runs; the latter is sort of multiplayer but not really at the same time. Monster Train also offers community challenges that you can create yourself and play challenges that other players created.

There are also mods for Monster Train but I haven’t tried any of them since it’s probably best to play the base game for a while before messing around with mods.

Rating
    Pros
  • Great art style and aesthetics
  • Good soundtrack
  • Factions feel unique and change up the gameplay
  • Interesting idea for some cards and factions
  • Daily challenges
  • Progression system
  • Mod support
    Cons
  • Some runs seem unwinnable at times
  • Some buffs and debuffs are annoying to deal with
Conclusion

Would I recommend buying Monster Train? Absolutely! The game is fun and I just like it a lot.
I believe that newbies and veterans of the roguelike / roguelite & deck building genre will enjoy playing this game a bunch.

The daily challenges as well as the progression system itself keeps me going and despite sometimes feeling that runs are super hard to win – it’s a good game which has quite a bit of replayability which is very important for such games.

The price tag of 24,50€ might seem a bit high but if I knew how much I like the game, I would have bought it without a discount but I understand if you think that the price might be a bit high for you personally.

You can always wait until Monster Train goes on sale and give it a shot then.

FOREWARNED
Have you ever wanted to be a cool egyptologist that tries to recover hidden relics? Yes? Awesome because this game will let you do that while getting chased by an angry Mejai whos slumber you interrupted.

https://node2.projectplanet.cn/@steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3251915964
I remember when this game was released into Early Access after the initial Phasmophobia hype and I wanted to buy it back then already but only ended up buying it this year after the official release and I don't regret it.

Your goal is to figure out which ghost Mejai haunts the tomb you're in.
After you did that your task is to yoink the relic out of the inner tomb which angers the Mejai and results into their manifestation. Depending on which Mejai it is, they will actively hunt you down - some of which have a keen sense of hearing, some fear the light and so on.

After you yoinked the relic you want to escape but you can't because the entry to the tomb is shut and you will need to find the right lever to open the door of the tomb.
That's it right? Figure out what kind of Mejai it is, yoink their relic, find the lever and bail.

Yes but you can go one step further and banish the Mejai which requires you to solve a puzzle and you have to bring some items to the lower level of the tomb for the banishment to work - there's a lot to do and the gameplay loop, that reminds me of Phasmophobia and Demonologist, is simple but great.

You can also collect lore pages and finish your treassure collection.
You can upgrade your gear and you even can buy pets which give you some neat passive abilities like being faster or negating the poison effect - and yes, you can pat them.

https://node2.projectplanet.cn/@steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3252564843
I recommend to play Forewarned with friends since there are some cool mechanics that kind of fall flat when you play alone. Also, don't worry about dying, there is always a way to come back to the world of the living even if it's with a twist.

"The ancient texts suggest there's a way to banish the evil that haunts these ruins by performing a ritual in the tomb's lowest level." - Some text from a dead egyptologist

MULLET MAD JACK
Mullet Mad Jack is a fast paced boomer-shooter roguelite set in the year 2095.

Story

The game is set in the year of 2095 in which robot billionaires have taken over the world and humans are highly addicted to dopamine. The player controls Jack who is a so-called moderator who was hired by Peace Corp. to rescue the Influencer Princess who is being held hostage in a massive skyscraper filled with killer robots. The princess is located 10 floors above you and you only have 10 seconds to reach the exit of each floor, sounds easy right?

https://node2.projectplanet.cn/@steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3303877776
Personal Note

I played the demo of Mulled Mad Jack earlier this year and it instantly hooked me despite not being a huge fan of boomer-shooters but the fast paced action and the setting itself just made me like the demo a lot when I played it.

The game itself was released not too long after I’ve played the demo and I purchased it fairly shortly after the release. The game feels good. It’s fast paced and the gameplay loop is straight forward: Your timer ticks down, killing robots gives time – dopamine goes brr; or something like that.

Quite honestly the story itself is okay but nothing special, right? It kind of has the whole Mario vibe. You finish the 10 floors; you defeat a boss and the princess is in another castle on another floor. Despite this sounding a bit whack, the story has certainly its moments, especially the epilogue and the whole premise of the game itself is quite interesting.

The gameplay loop is satisfying. The bosses are quite simple but can be a challenge on higher difficulties. Clearing a floor gives you an opportunity to buy new guns or new passive effects and defeating a boss grants you some permanent upgrades – so pretty standard roguelite elements that mix well with the whole fast boomer-shooter gameplay.

The upgrades that you get after every floor feel fair and nice. If you have a good gun and some good upgrades you will probably do more than well – especially in the endless mode in which your timer gets reduced by 1 second every 10 floors which makes the game harder after you’ve reached floor 40 since you will only have 7 seconds to complete the level; that means that getting hit and not instantly killing a robot could be fatal.

The art-style, the graphics, the music and the overall vibe of the game are great. It’s essentially a retro anime with a beefy male protagonist that yells those 90s action movie slogans every so often.

The length of the game isn’t too crazy either. It took me around 3 hours to finish the game which is alright since there is the previously mentioned endless mode in which you can unlock some more cosmetics and if you like to go for achievements there is a few of them that require you to play through the game on higher difficulties and such – so there is replay value for sure. I hope that there will me some more content update in the future though.

Speaking of different difficulties: There’s also a difficulty which removes the timer and changes the gameplay from a fast first-person-shooter to a boomer-shooter that let’s you play the game without needing to worry about the timer and such. I personally think it’s a nice idea but it’s certainly not meant to be played like this but it might be fun for some people that have beaten the game already and want to try something new. There’s also an achievement for completing the whole game in that mode.

Rating
    Pros
  • The story is okay but has its moments
  • Great aesthetics
  • Great soundtrack that fits the vibe
  • Nice voice acting
  • Nice mix of boomer-shooter and roguelite
  • Endless mode
  • Upgrades feel fair
    Cons
  • A bit short
Conclusion

Is Mullet Mad Jack worth your money? Yeah sure. It depends on what you want from a game.

If you go after the whole “1 Euro = 1 Hour” thing I’d say that it’s best to buy it on sale if you only plan on playing through it once without messing around with harder difficulties or with the endless mode.

For me personally, I bought it with the 20% off deal and I have to say that it’s worth it for me. I will probably mess around with the endless mode a bit and hope that the developers add some more content in the future since it’s a pretty good game that has a cool setting and great aesthetics.

There should be a demo available so you could just mess around with that before you decide on getting it or not.

DREDGE
Dredge is a fishing adventure game in which you uncover mysterious secrets that should best be forgotten.

Story

The story of Dredge is pretty straight forward: You play as a fisherman that accepted a job which leads you to a small costal town called Greater Marrow. Sudden fog makes it hard to navigate safely to the town and you end up wrecking your ship but the major of Greater Marrow offers you a new ship for some simple and fair work.

Soon after accepting the Major’s offer, the player starts realizing that this job is not as simple as it seemed at first. Strange fog appears after midnight. Strange ships sail around in the dark. You hear random horns and the fish you caught in the late hours of the day are mysterious and deformed.

After dredging up a mysterious artifact, the player encounters a strange man who calls himself the collector. The self-proclaimed collector has a nice little job for you but everything about it is as strange as the things you keep encountering, will you follow through with your newly acquired task or will you try to avoid it?

https://node2.projectplanet.cn/@steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3297004757
Personal Note

I bought Dredge last year but ended up refunding it at first because I wasn’t in the mood for a game like this. During this year’s summer sale, I purchased it again and gave it another shot and I’m glad that I did.

The game is quite relaxing and the story is slowly unraveling a somewhat sinister plot but I mostly enjoyed the progression and fishing of the game which are both main aspects of the gameplay loop – you fish to earn money and to finish quests that you receive from a bunch of different characters and you dredge to collect materials to upgrade your ship but you also use the dredge mechanic to complete quests. The gameplay loop is pretty simple but feels good and keeps you going.

One of the quests is rewarding you with a camera which unlocks the photo mode of the game. You can do this relatively early but I would advise you to do it only after you have one of the better engines so you can get there quicker and complete the quest in one day. The photo mode itself is pretty basic but it works well and gets the job done.

Every region comes with their own challenges and requirements for fishing. You have to use special fishing rods to fish in certain regions but most of the upgrades are pretty easy to get and if you don’t rush the main story too much, you will have plenty of money and resources to upgrade your ship.

Upgrading your ship and collecting resources for doing so gets somewhat tedious after a while, especially in the mid to late-game of Dredge.

It took me about 10 hours to play through Dredge and I fully upgraded my ship and spend quite some time on fishing to make money and on dredging to get resources which makes me think that just going for the main quests would probably cut the playtime in half.

As of writing this review, it’s just fair to mention that I haven’t completed the game fully yet – that means that despite finishing the main story twice for both endings, upgrading the ship fully and completing all of the puzzles, there’s still some side quests that I haven’t finished yet and aim on finishing before trying to 100% this game in the near future.

Another fair remark is that I hoped that both endings would be a bit better. I really enjoyed playing through the game so I’m hopeful that the already released DLC called “The Pale Reach” and the upcoming DLC, which will be released in August this year, can satisfy the craving I have for Dredge.

Rating
    Pros
  • Nice story
  • Simple but moody graphics
  • Nice soundtrack
  • Pretty relaxing game
  • A bunch of fish to collect
  • Lovecraftian monsters
  • Simple photo mode
    Cons
  • Upgrading your ship feels kind of tedious
  • Relatively short
Conclusion

Is Dredge worth picking up? If you like cozy games that have some slight horror elements to it or if you’re a fan of Lovecraftian stuff, then I would recommend you the game for sure.

If you’re just looking for a nice little indie title to play through, I would also recommend you this game. Grab it on sale if you think that 24,99€ is a bit steep for the amount of content you end up getting.

Total War: WARHAMMER II - Curse of the Vampire Coast
Probably one of the cooler factions if you just purely talk about aesthetics.
Who doesn't like pirates? Now mix that with undead & sea monsters and a bit of vampirism & necromancy and you get the perfect combination of fantasy pirates that are ready to get ya booty.
