potential to be one of the best survival games out there..

Disclaimer: I tried to provide some insight in thoughtfulness into every review. Whether it's a big publicly traded company or a 2 man indie developer, I try to give honest feedback/reviews fair and without bias. A person(s) (at least for now) has spent time on the game and in most cases the detail of where to put a single tree, I do my best to be mindful of that when writing.

The Last Plague: Blight

What I enjoy:

Impressive and thoughtful crafting. While crafting has worn out many gamers including myself from time to time, this one got it right. Every thing seems to have purpose. Every stick, every herb you collect feels like it has value and “I better save it”, might need it at some point. I’m a know video game crafting junk hoarder (the amount of cups and silverware and junk I saved in Bethesda games still embarrasses me). It never feels like I’m collecting trash here unless I accidentally pick up pebbles around my campsite, but I’m still optimistic that they can fuel a slingshot or have some utility in the later days, in the meantime, I wish I could just skip them into my lake while waiting for my rabbit to cook at my lakeside camp.

It feels like learning to survive and thrive from the ground up. You start on a what seems is a random map each time, which can have some downfalls as I slowly got better at predicting where I might find a cave. At least for me, in the early game think of Iron as Diamonds in Minecraft. There was much joy to be had figuring other things out while hoping to stumble across Iron in my early files which felt time overly time consuming and debilitating at times, but in the goal of trying to be real I can’t complain too much. It did allow me to stubble across some useful resources.

The detail and thoughtfulness seem to have rung through with my play throughs. I often imagine myself trying to make a Mud Brick Kiln and seeing if what I learned in the game has true merit. Sadly, likely won’t get to test unless there an a true apocalypse.

Incredibly realistic. This may frustrate many and be a turn off some, but I found because there was true realism and thoughtfulness behind it didn’t bother me. I will admit there is some balancing acts that might be required, but the updates already are a significant quality of life and time saving improvements.

The environment and the feeling of escaping to a world that you inhibit while playing a game. I haven’t had this experience since Red Dead Online could have been if they let you define a camp spot and a plot of land (minus the mindless killing by other players). The potential and staying power for the future is intriguing and impressive.

No crashes on PC or Mac. Very little if any glitches.


What needs Improvement:

Me. I’m a PC and using a keyboard to play a game novice. Controller support would be nice, as I struggle with moving cameras. I did try a Xbox controller, but didn’t mesh well.

Story vague but has me hooked enough to see it though for awhile.

Iron hard to get depending on play through.

Many of the daily tasks can become trite and repetitive, but does easy with time as you slowly build resources and more useful blueprints.

Animals made to be unrealistically aggressive. The world becomes a little dull if no threats, I get it, and they do have at least a little of “Blight”, but I recommend playing on the easiest level to numb this some.

Hope to keep playing in the long run, but did eventually stop playing after my OCD running it’s course for many hours after figuring many things out and the carrot or trying to create the “next thing” or “see the next thing” ran out.

Immediately addictive. Challenging, yet rewarding. Can't wait for full release.
