@Yellowknieboy: This game is awesome. I played for almost a year before I decided to purchase anything. Everything except for Camos, Helmets, Armors, and voice packs (all of which have no effect on your in-game performance) is available to be obtained for free. You just have to be willing to grind the XP to earn enough Certificates to buy them. Most default weapons you start off with are considered some of the best weapons in the game.

Definetly give this game a try. As Yodaman said, if at the end of the day you don't like it, it was free in the first place. Do note that first starting off in Planetside 2 can be VERY frustrating, because you will die more often than you are used to in certain other games. However, once you start getting the hang of things, and move around more tactically, you will get better. Just don't give up to soon, it takes a bit to get into.

Definitely! It's an experience unlike any game you will every play. And if you don't like it, you're not out of any cash and can just uninstall it.

@yellowknieboy It's more of a pay for convenience. Paying will, at most, get you XP faster along with new guns. Almost all of the guns are sidegrades however, so buying a new one won't necessarily make you better. The deafult guns are pretty awesome, some of them being the best in the game.
