I love this game and have played it since 2013-2014 and the state of decline of the support from the developers is apparent.

We have not received a meaningful update in 5 years and the bot crisis has made valve lobbies unplayable. Please fix the bot problem and bring back regular content updates. Or at least contract the game to a developer team that cares.

I'm proving to myself that I have the strength and the courage to be free. That is why I am leaving this review.

HELLDIVERS 2 is a once in a decade game that challenge the status quo of what makes a great live service game. Progression is not locked behind paywalls and has a development team that actively listens to it's community and consumers.

Currently the game suffers from lack of content due to the size of the development team and the pace to which they are able to push out updates. Some updates are hit or miss, but largely you can play the game however you like.

In addition, even though requiring PSN linking was repealed, the game is still not playable in those inital 174 regions and recently Sony added more to their list. Other games are also making a similar that are published by Sony so this is disturbing.

I came into this game completely blind to what Touhou style games were like. I was simply looking for a good styled action packed metroidvania. I can say I supported this game while in early access and the game really has improved in every area I expected and never expected it could. For starters each level has an interesting and engaging style, and also a kick-ass soundtrack to go with it. If there was anything that blew me away more than the fun and engaging combat it was the music as I speed run these breathtakingly beautiful levels. (Check out Team LadyBug they are talented!)

Oh my god the combat!

"You were expecting a time stopping knife throwing maid. BUT IT WAS ME DIO!!!" You can throw as many knifes, stun knifes as you want! Even a damn chainsaw?! Wanna stop time, throw some knifes, and then slowly walk past your victim and say "you are already dead"? Yep you can do that!

Also for the symphony of the night fans there is a floating sword you can find. The time stopping mechanics never get old running through the levels and also make for creative and considerably challenging bosses as the game progresses.

This game is well worth the price point. But if you don't want to pay the full $18, then pick it up on sale!

For starters Kurtzpel is a free game so please don't be swayed whether you should try this game or not. It's well worth the free download.

So let's get to the basics of what Kurtzpel is.

- It's a multiplayer arena style fighter with PvP and PvE matchmaking. The game play that follows is fast paced and visually pleasing. The games classes (or Karma's) are as follows at the time of the review: Sword, Fist, Bow, and Staff
- Two close range and two long distance play styles. All of the following are free.
-PvP is used to rank up E,D,C,B,A,G,S respectively.
-PvE is used to grind for gear at different difficulty levels (easy, normal, hard, very hard, and grand chaser) and to gain experience for the weapons and skills you use. Making them more powerful.
-The character creator is also a nice touch, but has some needed updates I'll touch on in what the game does well and doesn't do well.

Ok so here is what Kurtzpel doesn't do well or needs to improve on. Some can be over looked while others need fixing.

- The game is still in it's early stages and is in desperate need of more content to keep players committed. In addition, loot drops are few and far between. (Remember the order of difficulty? The drop rate for the items are as follows: 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%. and 5%) It isn't impossible to not get loot. I have gained at least five pieces of gear in my time playing. However, it needs to be higher. A solution for this could be to add more common loot to the game and to add more missions for loot variety.

*Note that the current version of the game makes cosmetic boxes purchase able with affinity points which is a currency for upgrading your gear. This is good news so there will be more gear going around and it allows more free to play plays to get cosmetics with out pay.

- Speaking of which there is a lack of variety for the missions in PvE, and a lack of maps for PvP. You mainly replay the missions from the beginner levels which you beat to get your classes. The difficulty keeps them fresh, however it gets repetitive with the same stages of each boss. Also conquest which is basically king of the hill is bugged and is being worked on. The game needs more variety in it's PvE as it can not stand on PvP alone. Perhaps longer missions in more open mission areas that give a bit of exploration.

-The character creator also has some customization options hid behind a pay wall. For some this isn't a problem.

-In addition to the character creator, making additional characters is put behind a pay wall as well. You start with one and you choose whether you want another character. Also rank is shared through accounts not characters.

-The story is forgettable. Then again people don't play free to play games for riveting, moving, or even heartfelt stories.

Ok so on to what Kurtzpel does does great and or is what sets it apart.

-The gameplay is a spectacle. Bright visuals, great effects, and fast paced action. At it's core Kurtzpel is a 2v2 arena fighter so it can be intimidating learning combos but it is very rewarding. Also there is the possibility of a single combo doing half or most of your health bar. So it punishes you for running into the enemies attacks.

- On the other hand the character creator is a breath of fresh air. There is a lot of features you can change for your character to make your character unique online. This ain't skyrim levels of customization with mods but it's still more than the average free to play mmo. Also with the anime-esk style it works well in it's favor.

-The loot can be gained for free through gaining affinity with an NPC (which gives you a complete outfit, skills and accessories. In total there are six NPCs and they each have their own gear to earn), PvE boss drops, and through the buying cosmetic boxes with currency you earn in game. In addition, there are plenty of different cosmetic items so each character doesn't look the same. There does need to be more outfits added but we will see that with each update.

*it's a bit of a grind for the free cosmetic boxes. But with the boosted rates you should always get something you want or something easy to sell on the marketplace.

Overall, I would say the Kurtzpel is fun anime arena fighter that I find relaxing to just grind PvE bosses and the occasional, PvP. My only major complaint is the lack of loot and the paywalls surrounding additional characters and additional customization options. The game is solid and with the added bonus of working toward free gear from npc's I'll keep coming back to it.

*Update as of 4/2/2020

The game has acted on some community suggestions but has taken many steps back. Removal of content, added paywalls for additional content. PvE has been largely forgotten about and over looked. Fun in the short run, terrible in the long run.
