Early Access-recension
Despite being in early access, this game is already a lot of fun, has a decent amount of good gameplay time, and really nails the core gameplay mechanics.

Weapons and abilities are varied, but all useful, so you'll have very different play experiences each run. It's impossible to win the first few runs (I think?), which makes it feel a bit grindy and repetitive as you earn various unlocks, but that scales up quickly. The combat is quick paced, dynamic, but tactically fulfilling, while the hordes of enemies have the perfect balance of feeling overwhelming but also manageable. If you've ever played Blood Bowl, there's a similar vibe to planning out your character's movements and synergizing abilities. There's also a decent strategic/resource management/base building side to things that forces tough choices on whether to spend limited resources to survive the next wave, or invest in longer term gains.

I'll update when the final release hits, but as is, if you like tactical, turn-based combat, and don't mind a bit of grindy repetition, you'll get a lot of mileage out of this game in its current form, and it should only get better with refinement.

I fired up the game one last time to verify some issues I had before posting this review...after a game update, my mouse movement is so jittery, I could hardly click to exit the game. The first time I started, I went to the options menu, clicked "yes" to subtitles, and it crashed. What a start.

Did you like the original (OLD original) Xcom? Would you like it re-skinned, with a clunky interface, and little explanation of game mechanics? If so, this is the game for you. The tutorial literally says the game consists of three main areas: Geoscape, Tactical Missions, and Base Management, and that's about it. Even the air combat doesn't bother to pull up a fake radar screen...planes and alien icons "pew pew" at each other on the Geoscape. There were a few new mechanics I discovered: for example, when a soldier got shot several times, he collapsed in a heap, but the message said he was "unconscious", and the aliens kept shooting and injuring him. I was able to stabilize him with a medikit, and he survived to fight again. I assume the aliens could have killed him, but he was already at 0 HP, so I don't know for sure: the game didn't explain the mechanics.

Perhaps the original also had the same, clunky interface, but after playing modern versions (even smaller budget things like Xenonauts), you realize what a time waste UFO2 is. You can't right-click to equip/unequip gear on your troops, you click and drag each piece. You can't select "snap shot" and then click on the target a few times; instead, you click on the weapon icon, then on the target, then select the type of shot you want. Then, to shoot again, you do the whole process over again, following each individual bullet (even in a burst) all the way to its destination.

Want to know which weapon to equip on a guy? Sorry, you can't hover the cursor over the weapon to get a pop-up box with the stats. Instead, you'll need to exit out of the personnel equipping screen, go to the UFOpedia, and look up the details there. I knew, from playing previous Xcom games, that building more workshops would let me build things faster (the UFOpedia didn't mention this). That may sound obvious, except the game also lets you build "detection stations" in your base. Some Xcom games let you build multiple radars to increase detection range, others don't. This one doesn't say, and doesn't show the detection range (not that I saw, at least), so who knows?

I fully appreciate the desire for an old-school Xcom-type game, and I was tempted to try and plow through this one, despite the flaws, but it's just not worth it. Wait for Xenonauts 2, see if fan mods later on streamline things, but don't bother with UFO2 in its current form.
