Max Heat 3: Monkey Island

New studio, new setting, new Max Payne game. What carried over and what's left behind? Let's cut straight to the action.



Painful Part
The story is obnoxiously cinematic to a point of it feeling like deliberate time wasting. The cutscenes are so numerous that it looks more like gameplay is interrupting them, not the other way around. The writing is just words, words, words. Do Max really has to have Hamlet's monologue every time he plants C4 or opens a door? Just shut the fuсk up and let me play.

The worst thing is, they can't even let you skip them properly, because there is "loading time" hidden beneath them. I would sooner believe that the real Jesus died on the Cross instead of being taken to Heaven by Allah rather than that a loading screen takes 2 min on ssd.



Bullet-time Action
One thing that the game's misery-fueled themes have going for, is that they perfectly reflect how painful it is to control Max's heavy movement with inertia. Without the elements that iI'll expand on later, I would just filed MP3 as another pretentious cover-shooter shooting too high with its cinematic ambitions.

However, slow and heavy movement can be mitigated by use of bullet-time and shootdodge. Avoiding damage and staying out of cover is dependent on skillful use of these elements. Shootdodge is incredibly powerful in MP3. Max's air time is insane, it's flying compared to one in previous entries. This makes using high places to extend shootdodge time very powerful strat and the fall damage is the lowest in the franshise. Also laying on the ground after shootdodge provides some soft cover and moment to reload after well placed jump.

Guns are also pin-point accurate - no gun sway, accuracy penalty or any other modern bul1shit. Extended arsenal is kind of redundant with many weapon variants filling-in same roles. Probably result of 3 weapons limit incentivizing picking and abandoning weapons based on situations instead of enagaging shootouts according to the potential that always-accessible, full arsenal would provide. Weapon selection in previous entries was much more varied with each weapons acting as different utilities.

The game also feels like some gritty and cynical remake of Duck Hunt with its scripted events and enemies placed in far, unreachable places in some segments. On another note, bullets in MP3 come out of dot on the screen, not from the barrel like in MP1&MP2 - ironic.

Bullet-time management is bit inconsistent with both slow-mo and shootdodge depleting the meter, but you can still use shootdodge after it's empty. It can be seen as a sort safety-net, because Max is too slow and cumbersome to avoid damage through movement of his, but at the same time it defeats the idea of meter management without punishment for empting it.

Game has rather impressive number of additional modes that motivate player to explore its mechanics. NYM mode has been changed in this one. From surviving under pressure of time, it has became more score based with game grading you based on the time you've accuired at the end.



Sober Conclusion
Without placing it under scrutiny of being Max Payne, It still has severe flaws and redeeming qualities. After installing proper cutscene skipper, I enjoyed 2nd playthrough much more, even despite few walking segments. I advise approaching it with open mind, treating it as its own game. Don't overrely on cover, play with bullet-time and shootdodge, ignore the plot and have fun.

Waifu May Cry 5: Special Edition is finally here

Imagine entire game as a Bloody Palace from DMC or Tests of Valor from Ninja Gaiden II, that's what Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae is. MKH is pure action - no forced adventure segments, no long cutscenes, no bullsh1t to distract player from the action.



What's the deal with Schoolgirl Gaiden?
First off, I have to mention that the controls are incredibly responsive and fully customizable. While the game doesn't have long and elaborate combo list, it only has 3 main attacks and few combos, along with standard amount of evasive and defensive options, it's more than enough. It's also good to mention that this game's version of counter-attack, or a parry, called "Flourish" is incredibly strict and requires frame perfect precision. I've never seen this type of attack in any other game being this demanding (if you think parrying is hard in Sekiro, try this one). I've never manage to master it consitantly. Additionally, any recovery can be cancelled with a guard, which makes combat very fluid.

MKH at its core is about managing katana gauge effectively and inflicting bleed status on enemies while trying to keep high Zeal rank for greater Zanshin damage and nice currency bonus too. While few, every attack in the game has its utility. Overall game has nice concept for its gameplay, even if it's not as deep or complex as the titles humorously aforementioned.

Enemies suffer a bit from punching bags problem. Majority of early enemies can be stun-locked very easily, same with others enemies, but they require certain attacks to do so. This issue is alleviate by making enemies insanely aggressive on Very Hard to a point that main herione's moveset doesn't seem overtuned at all. Only later enemies and bosses provide consistent threat, since they can't be easilly stunned.
I especially like the knight type enemy. They remind me of Berserkers from Ninja Gaiden, not just visually, but in they way they fight and require attention from a player. That said game has limited number of enemies, which is understandble given the indie size of the game, but it's tries to keep them varied and mixes them up in various stages to make the best use of them.

MKH offers nice selection of difficulty with the highest - Inferno - being nice twist. It's basically segmented no-damage run, even the weakest of the enemies one hit KO the player, but on the other hand opponents have significantly less health than on VH. Everybody who beats this on highest difficulty can just record their gameplay and upload it to YouTube with Title "Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae Inferno No Damage".
Howerver, the game isn't that well-balanced. VH and IN difficulties are made with NG+ in mind and are impossible on NG, let alone on any kind of NUR - at least that's my expierence, however I've never seen anybody done it.



Conclusion
In summary, there was clearly effort and passion involved when making this game. Gameplay is enjoyble, animations are very good and whole game only weights 107 mb! It's a simple, entertaining arcade title that's fun to play in short sessions. That's a huge positive, especially nowdays when majority of games today want to be glorified movies with little input from the player. It's price is adequate for its value, especially if you can get it on sale.

Biblia 2 - dzieje i zbrodnie Lary Croft

Rise of the Tomb Raider jest sequelem gry Tomb Raider z 2013 wieku, lepiej znanej pod tytułem "Pasja Lary Croft". Jest to równie nieoryginalna gra co poprzednia, jednak warto zaznajomić się z tą epopeję masowego wyrzynania, aby dalej śledzić jakie nielogiczności i głupoty twórcy wymyśli

Kontynuacja, tak samo jak poprzedniczka, podejmuję rozważanie nad treściami egzystencjalno-religijno-filozoficznymi i pewnie para innych superlatywów się jeszcze znajdzie. Twórcy w poprzedniej części ustanowili sobie za cel udowodnić, że Biblia czy Inferno Dantego to zwykłe gimbografomaństwo. Ta cześć jest jeszcze odważniejsza. Twórcy zabierają w niej głos w mającym ponad 1000 lat sporze nad naturą Trójcy Świętej, wyraźnie odpowiadając się po stronie obozu antynicejskiego. Związku z tym oraz z powodu drastycznego zmniejszenia się populacji ruskich na wskutek działań protagonistki w poprzedniej części, w tej odsłonie głównymi przeciwnikami będą żołnierze Trójcy, organizacji, która czerpie swoją nazwę od swojego fanatycznego wsparcia dla doktryny trynitaryzmu.

Choć raczej ofiary to lepsze określenie. Lara dalej udowadnia, że liczby ustanowione przez takie wybitne postacie jak Mao-Zedong czy Józef Stalin są tylko amatorskimi osiągnięciami. Na stan aktualny media dalej boją się pisać o zbrodniach panny Croft. Jeszcze jednak wracają do wątku teologiczno-religijnego, oczekuję, że w następnej części protagonistka będzie poszukiwać predestynacji oraz zmierzy się kalwinistami ukrywającymi zwłoki Kalwina w sekretnych katakumbach genewskich. Niewątpliwie, następne dzieło Crystal Dynamics zmieni na zawsze jak postrzegamy religię i życie w ogóle.

Ciekawym jest wybór miejsca akcji. Jest nim Rosja, konkretniej Syberia. Mylne byłoby przekonanie, że wybór tego konkretnego miejsca stanowi symboliczne pojednanie i przebaczenie prześladowcy z ruskimi ofiarami. Idąc dalej analizą działań na płaszczyźnie symbolicznej, trafniejsze byłoby porównanie symbolicznego znaczenia poczynań młodej pani archeolog do tych z operacji militarnej 1941 roku.

Zresztą Lara Croft będzie praktykować na tych terenach zawód archeologa w najlepszym tego słowa znaczeniu, tj. będzie skrzętnie niszczy wszelkie materialne pozostałości i świadectwa kultury tamtego obszaru oraz jej mieszkańców, a to co się ostanie będzie sprzedawać na czarnym rynku. Kolejną niewątpliwą pasją bohaterki jest kłusownictwo. Jest to bezsporny plus gry, jeżeli ktoś nie lubi rysi, może sprawić, że te małe kocie sk*wysyny z zagrożonego staną się gatunkiem wymarłym.

Nowym aspektem tej interaktywnej rzeźni jest znajomość języków obcych głównej bohaterki. Lara będzie miała okazję popisać się kompetencjami językowymi studenta, który desperacko próbuje zaliczyć kolokwium z łaciny. Słowem, to co ona tam odczytuję na tych ścianach, nie pokrywa się z prawdziwością. Twórcy położyli na to lachę i stwierdzili, że i tak nie będzie nikt tego sprawdzał. Dysonans jest tym bardziej zabawny, że spośród języków, który są dostępne w grze, i które Lara odczytuje, jest rosyjski.

Rozgrywka to dalej wtórne to samo, znaczy to, że jest to jakaś bliżej nieokreślona i nijaka mieszanina wszystkich możliwych design trendów z poprzedniej dekady. O wiele ciekawszym byłoby rozwodzenie się nad chemicznym składem Cyklonu B niż rozpisywanie się jak bardzo nieciekawie gra się w to. Aha, no i fabuła to sranie w banie jak zwykle i pretekst do słuchania oraz oglądania jak Lara jęczy i cierpi oraz następnie jak jej wrogowie cierpią (już bez jęczenia jednak).

Nie wspominając gra ma masę nielogiczności, której wymienianie zajęłoby zbyt dużo miejsca - ograniczając się do jednego. Zajebiście, że śmiertelnie rany mongolski wojownik tuż przed śmiercią zdążył schować swój bezcenny pierścień w staranie zamkniętym pudełku, które umieścił zaraz obok siebie - powalający instynkt przetrwania. Dobra, jeszcze jedna głupota - Boberek trzymający portret Dostojewskiego na syberyjskim z*dupiu.

Reasumując, Biblia 2 to dalej gra przereklamowana, najwyżej średnia, nie wybijająca się niczym nad konkurencją. Z plusów nadal pozostaje "Tomb Raider" na pudełku (choć już nie tak prominentny z powodu członu "Rise of [...]", jaki również wciąż fajnie się patrzy na dupę Lary jak się gra.

- one mode
- season passes
- no dedicated servers
- microstrancations
- cheaters
It will be dead in a week, even if it was added for "free" with RE VIII, it's still waste of money.
