Hot Damn. Wow. What a friggin' experience. I can not praise this game highly enough. I don't know if this is a game for everyone but for the right audience it's probably one of the best games they'll ever play. Just look at how many hours I've put into this game, 121 at the time of writing. I can't put it down and I only just reached the final dungeon.

Crosscode may appeal to you if you like or appreciate Japanese RPGs, action adventure games like Zelda, and difficult but fair games that intend to provide a challenge. Crosscode also offers up innovative puzzle design and side content to keep you busy for a really long time. Also, the visuals and the soundtrack to this game are top notch. Hands down, I've never seen another pixel art game that looks this good.

All that said, what is Crosscode? It's a top down action adventure game where the plot takes place inside an MMO. It's far enough in the future where a theme park called Cross World (yes, very much like West World) is built on the moon and players inhabit avatars and live out the fantasy of adventure. You play a mute girl named Lea who is playing the game under special circumstances. They quickly run you through the gambit of tutorials that showcase everything this game has to offer and its impressive. A critical part of the game's toolkit is Lea's ability to throw spheres, this mechanic alone is significant within the greater scope of Crosscode's design. Another one of my favorite aspects of Crosscode the vertical exploration. You see, this game IS 2D, but the environments are designed in a way that you can climb ledges and jump across gaps. This makes exploring the world itself one giant puzzle since your initially guided down paths that only show you roughly 30% of what the entire zone has to offer. In order to see everything else you will need to go off the beaten path and explore, find a way to ascend that cliff side so you can explore the area to the north of it. A lot of collectibles are strewn across the environment to help peak your curiosity. I genuinely got excited at the prospect of entering a new zone because that translated, to me, that I was getting dozens of hours of enjoyment doing some treasure hunting.

Then there's the next best part of the game, the dungeons and puzzles. Admittedly when I got to the first dungeon I was taken about at how difficult a lot of the puzzles were. For some reason I couldn't seem to wrap my head around how I was supposed to be thinking and I also half expected the puzzles in an adventure game to be puzzles for children to solve. No. These puzzles require serious thought as if you were playing Talos Principle or Portal. They also require skill, you'll need to quickly and carefully throw a projectile that is going to bounce around the room while you then immediately take off and start running and jumping across platforms so you can stand on a button that drops down a shield for the projectile to pass through. And once I started to get into the rhythm of the game and I started to view these puzzle rooms the way the developers intended, I started rolling through them. Eyeing up the rooms, calculating in my mind what needs to be done and how to do it. I loved the dungeons and they are the only dungeons in any game I've ever played that has successfully rivaled Zelda for once.

So yes, this is an absolute must buy. The amount of work that went into this game is astounding, it makes me think of something like Octopath Traveler and how that game studio has a budget from Square Enix to create a retro-aesthetic game and failed to come close to even 20% of what Crosscode is.
