Firewatch is all about the story. The game is a vehicle to tell a moving, immersive tale of love, loss and humanity. And, be warned, it's a story that draws you in and you will become emotionally engaged. That's the whole point of this game. The game mechanics themselves are very straightforward and you spend you time marching from place to place on the instructions of another Firewatcher. I didn't experience much chance to do other than what the game demands, but you are free to explore and pick your path between places. It doesn't feel restrictive. Perhaps think about this as a book/film that tells the story, but you're the one acting it out. It's short-ish, but I picked it up for a few GBP - I maybe wouldn't suggest paying full price.

I tried to avoid reading reviews of the game beforehand to avoid spoilers, but inevitably saw some elements of the story, so thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. I won't spoil it all, but there's a lot of twists and what you start off thinking this is all about, is not what it's actually about. With hindsight it was always going to be a bit leftfield, but it does it exceptionally well.

I really enjoyed my time playing Firewatch. It's what a good indie game should be. It has depth, it's not about superficial gameplay and it left a lasting impression.

Two pieces of advice - take more pictures with the camera (it's not vital to the game, but it adds to the finale) and be prepared to be thinking about this game all day after you finish it.

There's bugs. Manic alien bugs. Loads and loads of manic alien bugs. They keep changing what they can do and how they try to kill you, but always while relentlessly pouring forth toward you. There's also a story line, but, you know...

It's a fun blaster of a game, simple to pick up, great to play on a casual basis. I realised there was a bit more to it when I started using all the cool kit and upgrades I bought. They add significantly to the game and make it a lot more fun that the vanilla rifleman squad pours hot lead at alien swarm. There are tactics of a sort - sometimes it's better to approach the hives in a certain manner and turrets are a life saver, but generally it's all out shooty action.
