Frostpunk is a one of a kind hybrid of city builder, survival and strategy in a dystopian world of alternative XIX century steampunk history where people are struggling to prepare for oncoming frozen climate catastrophe.

The game is unlike anything else I played before. It's perfectly balanced and has many layers of gameplay mechanics like struggling with limited resources, sickness, expeditions, hope/discontent balance, optimal building placement or difficult mutually exclusive tech/moral choices. Beautiful graphics, stylized interface, steampunk sounds, orchestral music - every detail just seem to fit together.

Frostpunk's main "disadvantage" is that it's hard, very hard. On survival mode even seems impossible yet still beatable and extremely satisfying if you manage to make it.

So far there are 3 main big scenarios and 2 a bit smaller ones:

"The New Home" introduces all game mechanics progressively and smoothly worsen weather conditions until the critical point: the storm. It's recommended for new players to start from this one.

In "The Fall of Winterhome" you have to deal with the inevitable catastrophe and prepare people for evacuation while restoring order to mismanaged city given from the very start.

"Last Autumn" is a prequel scenario where generator - the core of the city, has to be built before winter comes. It introduces completely different research tree and law mechanics.

"The Arks" shows the same mechanics as in "The New Home", only starting conditions and goal is different (maintaining heat in seedling arks spread in a distance from central generator).

“The Refugees” is similar to "The New Home". You have to deal with a constant flow of new people incoming to your settlement increasing demand for food, healthcare and forcing to find employment for them.

Every scenario except The Arks and Refugees has unique scripted events, mechanics and problems to solve. Also each of them is replayable since you can choose a different Law path vastly differentiating the whole playthrough. Unlike scenarios in other games these ones are not merely an additional minor content. I'd consider them as fully developed expansions and can't wait for the new ones to be added in the future.

The Endless mode is some form of a filler content for those who want some more from the game. However it’s still very well designed and thought through. You have a selection of different starting conditions where you must face frequent short storms as you progress. It’s challenging, satisfying and requires specific approach to long term planning.

Creators managed to deliver a game which is not only original in its concept but also very well tested and polished in almost every aspect. I played on the hardest difficulties and never felt like I can exploit something. To the very last moment holding my thumbs hoping there is enough resources saved, discontent level is within control and that my people are hoping with me. The amount of satisfaction you get every time you manage to last a few days longer this time is priceless.
