For most people sonic forces is at worst simply a boring game that lacks any care for depth or nuance in its gameplay and is mostly inoffensive. but i am not a normal person and i decided when i played this game that i would 100% because it is infamously easy and short, and this was my biggest mistake in recent memory.

Sonic forces as a 100% completion is a grueling grind which holds zero punches as it repeatedly kicks you when you're down. there are plenty of pieces of completion that are totally reasonable like the red rings and S ranks which are completely fine and are out of the way soon enough, but the second you complete your first level with all the red rings the problem rears its ugly head. you have to complete every level in the game at least 3 whole times to complete the game at minimum, that's an ideal scenario where if you are playing for your first time or playing a level where the red rings are in positions where they aren't realistically collectable in a single play-through this 3 hour game can quickly balloon to 12+ hours especially if you don't use guides to find said collectables. this is truthfully completely shameless and is designed to waste as much time as humanly possible when most of the time these items are positioned in a way that WOULD HAVE ALLOWED YOU TO COLLECT THEM ALL IN A SINGLE PLAY OF THE LEVEL. its really frustrating and extremely unsatisfying to play most of these this many times repeatedly with the complete lack of choices in the levels themselves.

Another element of this game that just completely sucks and solely exists to pad out completion time in a blatantly ridiculous way is the mission system which instead of having every mission unlocked and completing them as you play they unlock by completing other mission some of them are COMPLETELY unrelated (why the hell did completing a modern sonic mission unlock classic sonic mission actually why tf?) and on top of that MANY of them are the exact same mission you just beat with a higher number which means you have to do the SAME EXACT THING YOU JUST DID BUT SLIGHTLY MORE just to complete that newest mission which is shown most egregiously with the wispon mission where once you complete the first kills mission you get another WITH THE EXACT SAME WISPON with a slightly higher kill requirement which is on EVERY WISPON IN THE GAME and makes me wonder why they even ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bothered with the first mission to even begin with. and this qualm brings me to another issue i had with the game.

SOS missions are so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid and i don't understand why there were made the way they are. i genuinely cant describe my confusion on the implementation of this very unnecessary and quite frankly, lazily constructed mechanic. SOS missions randomly show up after you complete a level (or collect a checkpoint? i never got it to work when i tried the method but someone else said they used RNG is a complete ♥♥♥♥♥) and exit to the map. this is entirely dependent on luck and on my play-through of the main story i didnt get a SINGLE SOS mission. which meant i didn't even know how to trigger them and what i had to do to complete the SOS mission achievements was play levels over and over again until i got one. which brings me to the biggest problem with the game.

90% of my playtime in my hunt for 100% completion is grinding levels over and over. there are so many achievements that simply requires to complete levels to progress. In order to complete the ring king achievement you have to play a level that gets you max rings over 100 times to complete this achievement fully. this seems not to bad when you factor in other play-through's of levels to get 100% completion anyway but most levels give you around 200-400 rings if you don't get hit (which isn't something you normally have to worry about) which means by the time you complete those other levels you will likely have been sitting around 30% completion which would require you to still play 70 play-through's of a level to get the achievement, and i can genuinely tell you i have played arsenal pyramid so many times in my completion grind that i could legitimately play the entirety of the level blindfolded which brings me to my conclusion.

At the end of it all Sonic Forces is inherently a boring and unenjoyable game that exacterbates all of the problems with 100% completion tenfold. i don't think i would mind the grind nearly as much if the levels were fun, or mind the fact that dying during an SOS mission fails the mission and makes you grind all over again if the controls were precise and reliable, or even seeing classic sonic at any point during said grind if playing as him wasn't so deeply unfun on a visceral level. the game suffers from padding out an essentially surface level holding forward simulator to such a ridiculous degree. that fact they felt the need to milk this much content out of this game to get it to an acceptable length is unfathomably pessimistic view from the developers on the game quality itself, and is proof of SEGA's negligence to the quality of product they are willing to prematurely ship out to its consumers and should be viewed as the waste of time and money it truly is.
