You know all those gacha-based games where you have to rely purely on rolling the dice to get rare items?

Well in this game, you'd have to suffer for 20 minutes before getting to roll the dice.

As the third installment to the Kingdom Rush series, Origin definitely does not disappoint. The cartoonish, but polished art style along with engaging gameplay in the form of long-cooldown AoE clear, Reinforcements and Heroes is the formula that makes this game stand out among other TD games, and i wouldn't have it any other way.

One thing i regret about this game however is the playtime. I finished the entirety of the campaign along with Heroic and Iron in Veteran difficulty after only 8.6 hours. I know there are DLCs for this game, but the first one's about a month from now. I just wish there are more reasons for me to play this game. Also the heroes are unlocked behind levels, and while i don't think that's necessarily bad, i barely had any playtime with the final 3 heroes (Xin, Faustus, and Vez'nan, the last of which is my favorite in the entire series after i played the mobile version), which are unlocked behind the final campaign stage.

Also the Heroic and Iron challenges were way too easy. And that's because of 2 reasons : 1) You are allowed to use heroes, meaning that a high-level hero will dunk on Heroic and Iron on the earlier levels of the game, and 2) The devs mostly meme around with the levels, an example is the Iron challenge in Unseelie Court, where the enemies were mostly scourger-boosted bunnies. I wished the game was a tad more difficult. All the more reason why i can't wait for the DLCs because the post-game levels in the first Kingdom Rush game was brutal on Veteran, and the ones on the second one were decent.

Overall, 8.5/10. Great game, just wished it had more playtime and slightly harder. Gonna update this review when the DLCs are released.

Also by DLCs i meant content updates. Oh well.

The recent Wonderland Dreams expansion has brought a lot of mixed reactions along with it (literally, check the recent reviews). Dominated by a single archetype that's fitting the name of "Spawn of the Abyss", the ladder on lower ranks turn into something of purgatory, where mirror matches are abundant and the outcome is almost very easily determined by who goes first in the said mirror match.

However, following the various desperate attempts of countering the archetype-that-must-not-be-named, the july nerfs dropped, and quite frankly, it was necessary. Overcoming their streak of not wanting to nerf any legendaries, Cygames managed to swallow their pride and nerfed not 1, not 2, but 3 legendaries in the same update.

So how is the current state of the meta? Well, it has somewhat returned to the pre-WD meta, except that the power levels of the classes are currently much more balanced, with shadow and dragon not as oppressive as it was, haven receiving new tools from the expansion, and the abundance of control decks makes combo decks like Dimension Shift, Wolf Bolt, and OTK Roach serves a purpose to counter the current meta decks in the ladder, and in tournaments.

I, and i'm sure cygames too, are aware that this game's meta is not perfect, but they are trying to balance it out by releasing an update at the end of every month now. So far, the state of the ranked ladder is much more acceptable than it was pre-nerf, and if you want to get into the game, or resume playing, now is a good time to do so.

I have to say, i was skeptical about this game's release in Steam due to it having a Flash, Android and iOS version, but then i found out they have removed ALL MICROTRANSACTIONS in this game from the previous versions. The gameplay itself didn't change, save for more stages of mini-campaigns that's available once you beat the main campaign ( Something you can't get on the Flash version ). The game has around 12-24 hours of gameplay depending on what difficulty you're playing, with 12 playable heroes, a commendable variations of enemies for an indie game, 12 tower upgrades, and 30 perks to unlock. Instructions and the in-game encyclopedia are well-written and easy to understand, and its increasingly difficult stages makes this game a challenge to beat even for veterans. The only thing that bothers me is the AI of some heroes and the recent bug that i experienced where a boss is unable to move/stuck in one position when you have multiple slowing effects applied to the boss, but all in all, this is one of the best strategy game i've played, and all i have to say is... I'll be waiting for Frontiers to arrive on Steam :D

9.5/10

Hands down one of the best free-to-play game i've played. if you don't mind a MOBA that updates frequently, try this out.
