Jan '16: Devs are putting in more work ++rep

There's not much competition in the junk-shooting genre - maybe What's Under Your Blanket - so if you've seen a few seconds of gameplay you'll know if this suits you and whomever is on your couch, or not.

Fantastic production quality on this - it's exactly what it looks like, a classic psychological horror romp that raises the bar for those that follow; a haunted house where the player is the Big Bad.

The dev team's next game Observer is even trippier but this one's less likely to trigger seizures.

Pairs well with: Among the Sleep.

DISCLOSURE: I tweaked an .ini file to make it run at 60fps.

Crazy, inventive, utterly stylish and nonsensical, KiD is probably a Cult Classic already.

Gameplay is quite similar to Devil May Cry (either the original PS2 one or the recent British reboot) and so is the sense of confused wonder and delight this game frequently induces.

The dating minigame will scar you for life.

Morphopolis has some nice artwork but suffers from terrible usability issues.

Gameplay is "Hidden Object" clicking; the objects are usually not very hidden at all, but they are progress-gated so that you cannot click on them until the game lets you.

Character movement is a nightmare. The game forces you to backtrack and just walking from screen to screen feels like a battle of wills.

A fullscreen puzzle on level 4 (flower pollen) cannot be exited without force-quitting the game and provides so little feedback that it caused an immediate flurry of users begging the devs to fix it upon release; over six months later there have been no updates.

I cannot recommend this at any price in its current state.

After 45 minutes I can maybe clarify what the game's like at first, but I think that for people who are going to enjoy it, it will take longer than that to "click" and get into a flow state, a bit like Space Giraffe.

So on first plays what you're gonna notice, after the oooh backgrounds and aaah firecracker explosions, is that this seems to be a non-randomised score-based shooter with not many enemies, not many power-ups and a surprisingly short single level which then repeats with different lighting, once.

And that's it, pretty much.

Like in Dark Souls, your score and your money are the same thing so you have to trade-off better firepower (a very slow progresion of not-much-better firepower) against "winning" and if the highscore tables aren't tainted by hacking - that would kinda be a total bummer - then yes some people have found a groove and played it thru for hours.

Although the limited types of enemies seem to be the same every time per level, after each loop they change to new placements and movement patterns - and so far, with very few bullets and very few enemies at a time. I have not played far enough to say if that variation per level continues with some randomised algorithm or if that too goes back to the beginning after a surprisingly short period.

Even at a couple bucks in a sale, I was disappointed by the lack of content the devs seem to have put in; the quality is quite nice (main menu interface is not very honed) but there's very little of it. From a gameplay perspective - if this hasn't been patched - the inability to repair your shields with money between levels seems just a wrong choice.

I also had technical problems on first install where the scrolling and music stuttered, until I moved the game files from HD to RAMdisk.

Just because the levels don't change, it's vertical scrolling and quite slow paced, I can see myself playing this again. But if you can cope with sideways scrolling instead of vertical and want what this trailer looks like but moreso, I recommend Platypus for same idea, more content +did it first.

If you saw any of the promo vids made in 2013/14 you should know that the game does not work as advertised. There is no multiplayer, no planet the size of Jupiter, no interconnected worlds - only two levels and the second one is bugged as of January 2015. You cannot challenge the God of Godus to win real money, nor play with your friends on Steam or mobile. The game play has moved from "clicking" to "stroking" but there is no single player campaign, just director's commentary which explains how freemium elements like timers and gems are a good thing. There is no re-invention of the God Game, it's a bit like Farmville and the premium version is the same as the Android version except for reduced wait timers. Mac users should know that they are at the bottom of the bugfixing to-do list, but I hear that Godus 3 will be amazing! Apparently you can plant an acorn that gives unconditional love and win a real dog or something because it's not on rails so you should probably save up and buy that. 53%/10

OK lots of thumbs down and here's another but this game is not *just* junk, I believe it's "about something" in the way that most student short films are "about something" and it does contain thought provoking ideas and some sort of emotional payload. However, there is very little "content" here and many problems with the way the ideas have been implemented and packaged as a for-money videogame.

If you've seen the movie Groundhog Day, imagine a version of that which is 5 minutes long with only about 5 camera shots and instead of being about learning how to be a great human being, the story's about Bill Murray having to guess the correct gift-object to give to his crush out of a choice of maybe a dozen. (And spoilers, no happy ending.)

Or The Stanley Parable with 2% of the content.

Factor in some amateur voice acting, minimal animation, a short background ambient sound which fades out and back in at each repeat instead of looping seamlessly, forced repetition of conversations that even the developer tells us to skip and literally one puzzle to solve: which hotspot do you click on at which time and which of the possible paths do you take through a 3-level dialogue tree?

All of the "Achievements" can only be won by brute force random clicking, while the game tells you aloud that you suck and chose poorly every couple of minutes and punishes you with the exact same 3 choices and audio clips for the Nth time.

To make things worse, for me it seems buggy. The scene would change back to the start room and the customer would complain that an object I hadn't even clicked on was totally wrong for him. Then I'd get an Achievement.

Having "won" (after more than an hour) it seems the secret message is about *not wasting our precious time* but I feel this minigame does just that and for very little reward. Glad it came "free" in a Humble Bundle. There are many nice things in how it was made and I look forward to the creators' next, more fleshed-out project.

Although this presents as edutainment, with a lot of crazy $10 science words like "allele" and "phenotype," it plays much more like a fairly unforgiving business sim than a biology lesson.

After a few game days I worked out that most of the customer orders are not just hard or impossible to fulfil, but also involve selling special-order custom items at lower than the wholesale prices for standard varieties. So, the economy is strangely (lovingly caressed) against you. You can decline orders with no consequence as far as I could see, they just keep cycling through until you have the maximum number accepted.

Aside from the business model being odd, the real science of plant breeding is glossed over. I got the idea that some plants are "simple" like sunflowers, and you can just choose through selective breeding whether they shoot sunlight or rainbows, whereas a Pitcher Plant is more complex with variables such as whether it holds a hot or cold beverage and if it has a sippy-cup or a lid, but you choose those traits by clicking on a button and it doesn't explain anything about how to actually do that to your Mom's houseplants.

Good points: for one there's no time pressure, just resource juggling. Also I did feel a genuinely heartwarming moment when, after days of fighting foreclosure, no money in the bank, no credit available and no way to fulfil paying customer orders I was able to waste my last 6 Gold Coins on a stock bunch of white daisies to sell for 3 Gold Coins to some scruffy street urchins who needed a break. The smiles made my day and the business turned around from that moment. So the Karma Simulation seems solid.

Upgrades to the store itself are unlocked very early and I strongly recommend getting the Breeding Machine Power Upgrade asap, as that is the only possible source of profit as far as I can see - the machine manufactures new plants at no Gold cost and the number of uses refills each day (starting on the day AFTER you buy it, I think.)

Graphics are excellent, hand-painted stuff in the ballpark of Bastion and nice animated, the sound's fine but the voice acting is patchy and amateurish, it seems like a port of tablet game but runs fine on my Windows 7-64 rig.

Not sure if "terrible fake accents" is a good or a bad thing but it has that too. Also a Catctus... I mean a cactus shaped like a cat, in Spiky or Fluffy varieties. There are rabbit and chicken plants too.

Science!

Broken but interesting. Cycles between 2 scenarios, both on the same tiny map. Gameplay is mostly typing in chat, a point and click adventure but with only live players to interact with. Had a few fun games... randomly playing as different characters with pre-made backstories works well. Some game-breaking bugs as of this review - interface buttons not functioning, text describing the opposite of what happened - and no apparent points or way to see who "won" or "lost." If role-playing in text chat sounds good to you, check it out.
