Really wanted to like this game but there are so many quality of life and gameplay issues that make it near miserable to play at times. The Spelunky moments can be hilarious. When something blows up off screen and takes out enemies or triggers traps in fun "physics" ways is when Spelunky shines. The art style is great, music is fitting, enemies fit their respective biomes and are interesting as each has a different strategy to engage.

The problems:
The primary weapon being the whip is horrible. If you have online game articles talking about how "back-whipping" is how you should be playing then there's a problem.
Speaking of whipping, why is attack and pickup the same key? In a game where NPC's are the most dangerous characters in their ability to kill your run and are so easily aggro'd, picking up an item from them shouldn't be a liability. This along with not killing your damsel or ghost jar.
Speaking of the ghost : why does a game named after discovering and exploring caves hate exploration so much? A 3 minute timer before the ghost comes does nothing but rush new players and inhibits any exploration. Break the ghost jar? Sure, reward greed with risk. Attempt to explore and learn the game? Get rewarded with death.
The concept, style, lore, secrets, variety of levels, "Spelunky Moments" = 10/10
Gameplay: 2/10.

Everything wrong with Enter the Gungeon. 1000+ hours on EtG. The RNG is either "when its good it's meh and when its bad its unplayable. If you don't love blessed runs you'll hate this game. Nothing beats a run where you have makeshift cannon and double vision yet the final dragon takes so long you're now fighting final Dragon with either mahguny or quad shot that wont reach the Dragun. It feels like a cash grab. We included all of the elements you loved in EtG but miss the mark on so many spots.

10 matches - 3 Server Disconnects, 2 Game Crashes, 3 Kills by cheater (same name each time, 1 shot headshot), 2 actual rounds. So those 2 actual rounds can be a lot of entertainment but at a 20% success rate compared to the game crashing or server disconnect its not worth the trouble.

Do I recommend it? Yes but not at the full price. Because I paid full price this review is based off of that. If it were $20 or even $30 it would be different.

No longer are there weapons and armor to collect and customize (you do get costumes which have no benefit).
Artifacts replace the perks system from SoT.
A lot of the missions feel very much the same, the map feels tedious (especially if you did a SoT run through in anticipation of FBW) and it lacks a lot of the grandure SoT had.
Even the other developing game mechanics feel like they were pulled nearly directly from SoT. *See a particular out of place item with a chest nearby* "Looks like I have to wait to get *that* powerup"

SoT had a solid story between the two parties, leading up to a mutual enemy and so forth.
FbW has a fairly weak story thusfar and fetch side missions barely or not at all connected to the main story.

The fight mechanics and boss battles are a nice touch, albeit take some time to get used to. The group fighting does add to some more complex stategy potential.

Lastly are the crashes and glitches. More than a handful of times now have I had text boxes that are blank and missing information, 1 bluescreen crash, a few of the toilet games glitch and 3 soft locks on the start of a fight (enemy gets knocked out by first attack and microaggression then the fight is locked waiting on the knocked out enemy's move).

In short if you're a huge South Park or SoT fan go for it but dont expect to get blown away. If not, wait for it to drop to the sub ~$30 price point.

Early Access Review
22 Hours and however many dosens of games later...

Sure it is still early access so this will mostly be for what I'd like to see come prime time.

Weapon Variety will need to increase as well as drop rate. Clearing a building to find only perks and a hammer with *maybe* a crate somewhere meanwhile someone loots a building with armor, spears and tracker. Some weapon ideas: net gun, arrow mods (explosive tipped, poison tipped), flare gun, baseball bat with mods, once you take bleeding damage leave a trail of blood, Hell honestly you could heave over to the PayDay DLC's and just look at all the DLC weapons packs they have - they'd be perfect. Imagine running through the woods in some super loudy clanky super high defense armor with a sword and crossbow but are super prone to from behind assasination attacks? Awesome.

The single map gets old really quick. Since the only thing that changes is the drops/crates/perks the terrain gets old. Would like to see multiple maps, different enviroments, night battles, etc.

Teaming. Oh team play. Get stuck with someone whose never played before? Sorry but you've lost. Get teamed up with someone 900yds away but an enemy team spawns practically next to each other? You'll get picked off before you reach your team mate. A better communication system needs to be made. Something like whistles or shouts rather than typing "35 SE" meanwhile Mr 35SE is now 1SE. Also a rage mode.. because it is infuriating when your team mate gets off'ed 2 minutes in (at 700yds away) so get a speed/damage perk but a screen effect that makes it harder to spot opponents.

All in all it has potential. Luck plays a huge role which could be balanced out but overall as long as the devs go in the right direction things could get better for sure. 7/10
