Introduction

So, Chasing the Stars, another game developed by Ertal! I’d been super excited to play this game, and I finally managed to get it to work! I’d reviewed A Hand in the Darkness, another game Ertal developed. You can read my review for it here.

Honestly, I am a little disappointed. I tried hard to like it, I really did. The first half of the game was really interesting, and the plot is amazing. However, it seems to have been poorly written. Some parts felt very rushed, whereas other parts that weren’t so interesting seemed to drag on which made it feel more like a chore to play. However, I did enjoy the overall plot of the story, the moral ambiguity and the fact that the villain was a romance option. I’ve seen other people irked by the fact that the villain was a route, but honestly, I loved it. While I dislike the villain as a whole, I like how Ertal still introduced him as a route. Along with this, I loved the little ‘mini-games’, where you’d have to actually click on items, rather than having the options presented to you. It made the entire experience a lot more immersive.

The game starts off with Tirs Abril suffering heartbreak after his boyfriend of six years breaks up with him. Realising he’d thrown away a chance to follow his dream career for his now ex-boyfriend, he decides to talk to the professor who offered him a place, Dr Rossel. However, Tirs ends up involving himself in something much darker than what he expected...

Pros

- An amazing plot, seriously. I love how Ertal always manages to think of intricate plots. Just like A Hand in the Darkness, Chasing the Stars has a mysterious plot, one that seems to have been really well thought out!
- The option to top/bottom/skip the NSFW scenes! I think this is a nice touch as it provides different CGs and immerses the reader.
- The little ‘mini-games’, where you actually have to click on different objects in the room, rather than just having all the options presented to you. This made the experience a lot more immersive, and it’s a nice touch! It’s something I haven’t really seen in other VNs!
- Exploring moral ambiguity. I love it when characters aren’t exactly ‘good’, but they aren’t exactly ‘evil’ either, and they have to do what has to be done, even if it means potentially ruining a few lives in order to save an entire species. While I definitely dislike the villain in the story, I can’t help but feel sympathetic. He’s more like an anti-hero.
- The pretty CGs. Honestly, I love the art style for the CGs, they’re so good! However, the sprites don’t seem to be as detailed as the CGs, which is understandable! But it would have been nice if they were.

Cons

- Only one CG for each NSFW scene. I’ve played a few VNs with adult content, and they had multiple CGs during each hentai scene. Now I understand that making CGs does take a lot of time and effort. But I personally believe that extra effort and care should be given when making these kind of games.
- The voice acting. While the voice actors were great, the fact that no one seemed to check whether their lines matched the script was what irked me. Voice actors would pronounce names differently each time, and also made several grammatical errors which should have been picked up on by the developers. Along with this, the volumes of some voice actors varied. Lowering the background music didn’t help, as some VAs said their lines louder than others.
- The second half of the game felt rushed and wasn’t as in depth as the first half was. Some interesting scenes were rushed, whereas other boring scenes seemed to drag on. For example, there were a few timeskips which really shouldn’t have been there in my opinion. For example, Tirs breaking into the secretary’s office was completely omitted. I feel like this would have been something that definitely could have been explored more.
- The random close up shots during the NSFW scenes seemed kind of pointless to me? I understand the developer was probably trying to tease the reader before revealing the full CG, but I don’t believe it should have been done in this way.

Love Interests

Pol Sans - Pol’s been best friends with Tirs ever since high school. While the whole ‘just a friend who’s actually been in love with the MC but the MC’s too oblivious to notice’ is overdone, that doesn’t mean Pol isn’t a sweetheart! Honestly, I love Pol, not as much as Biel, but he’s definitely second best boy!

Marc Rossel - Marc is… An interesting character to say the least. He’s the professor who recruits Tirs on in helping him build the dome that will cover the inhabitable part of Alaya. However, it turns out that there’s something morally wrong about continuing the project...

Biel Ferré - Best boy! I loved his route! His bad end almost made me cry, and I was so upset because I noticed the hidden message, but couldn’t do anything about it since I picked the wrong option. But besides all that, Biel is a very smart individual, who’s pretty gloomy and doesn’t seem to want to interact with others much.

Conclusion

A very interesting VN that had the potential to be something amazing. Unfortunately, for me, the second half of the game felt lacking in depth and honestly, a little rushed. However, Biel’s route was very satisfying throughout the entire route, so I’d definitely suggest playing through his route if you do choose to buy the game. I’m definitely excited to see Ertal’s future games!

Introduction

I have just recently released a review for Nekopara Vol 1, which you can read here. Of course, I had to play the second volume too! The story has much more substance than the previous volume, and while it still isn’t noteworthy, an improvement is still an improvement. Nekopara Vol 2 has new features, such as being able to pet the catgirls, and pressing ‘P’ to activate jiggle physics, rather than having to flick the window up. Sayori’s art has definitely improved, and it shows! Most of the soundtracks are re-used however, but that’s fine in my opinion.
In Nekopara Vol 2, the story picks up after the events of Vol 1. However, the main focus of the story is based on Coconut and Azuki and their relationship. Both catgirls seem to dislike each other on the surface, but is this really the case?

Pros

- Again with the stunning art. This volume has more CGs than the last, and Sayori has definitely improved with her art.
- Sprite animations are a lot smoother and more realistic. Transitions between each sprite are also incredibly flawless.
- NSFW scenes are really well-written, and voice-acted too! The animations during each NSFW scene were also very smooth too.
- Character design. I’m not gonna lie, Cinnamon’s character design is one of the main things that lured me into this VN, even if she isn’t the main character in this volume.
- Clean and easy-to-navigate UI. As someone who strongly dislikes clunky UI’s, I’m glad Sayori has cleaned up the user interface a little!
- New features, such as being able to ‘pet’ the catgirls! This definitely helps immerse the reader.

Cons

- The story is again, nothing special. However, there is a lot more character development. But then again, most people get Nekopara for the mature content and not the storyline. I myself am guilty of this!
- A few grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. I’m being very nitpicky however. This didn’t really bother me, since mistakes were scarce.
- Unable to play as a female protagonist.
- You have to pay extra for the NSFW DLC. For a game that’s been promoted as a NSFW game, it’s a little strange they decided to lock all the mature content behind a DLC.

Love Interests

Azuki - Azuki is the oldest out of all the Minaduki catgirls. Being short-tempered and a little brash, she can be seen as the ‘tsundere’ of the group. True to her tsundere nature, she does care deeply for her family, even if she doesn’t show it. She’s also very small. Like. Very small. I wanna hug her D:

Coconut - One of the younger Minaduki catgirls. As she’s quite tall and strong, she desires to be seen as cute, just like her sisters. She has the desire to mature as quickly as possible so as not to burden Kashou. This inevitably leads her to create a false facade of herself, and under all the pressure of trying to be someone she’s not, she acts extremely clumsy and is very self-conscious.

Conclusion

If you enjoyed the first volume, I strongly suggest getting this volume too! Nekopara Volume 2 still retains the charming, heart-warming story that the first volume did, not to mention the NSFW scenes have definitely improved too, and there are a lot more of them!
However, if you’re someone who buys VNs for the storyline, then I’m afraid this VN just isn’t for you! However, you can check out our curator page, to see our other recommendations!

Introduction

Nekopara is a popular visual novel. It is mainly known for its stunning art, and for its mature content, which are unlocked through a paid DLC. This VN is fully voiced, and the sprites are all fully animated too. While the story is mediocre at best, it definitely makes up for it with the stunning art and the wonderful soundtracks!
In Nekopara, you play as Kashou Minaduki, a young adult male who is about to open his own patisserie in order to pursue his dreams. He’s all set, ready to open up the next day, when he suddenly notices two of the family’s catgirls have managed to sneak in! Unable to send them back due to their love for him, Kashou has to try and manage a business and look after the catgirls too!

Pros

- Stunning art. Seriously. The sprites are all animated smoothly, and the cg’s are absolutely beautiful too.
- Fully voiced. With the exception of the protagonist, all the characters are fully voiced. While there isn’t an English dub, the Japanese voice actors still did really well.
- The NSFW scenes are really well written and honestly, some of the best I’ve seen. Which makes sense since Nekopara is promoted as a game well-known for its mature content.

Cons

- The story is pretty bland, but most slice of life stories can be lacking in story.
- Unable to play as a female protagonist.
- You have to pay extra for the NSFW DLC. For a game that’s been promoted as a NSFW game, it’s a little strange they decided to lock all the mature content behind a DLC.

Love Interests

Nekopara Vol. 1 has two main love interests.

Chocola - Chocola is Vanilla’s twin sister. She’s the more energetic and cheerful out of all the Minaduki catgirls. She can act quite childish, and hardly ever ends up being upset.

Vanilla - Vanilla is Chocola’s twin sister. In contrast to Chocola, she’s more stoic and calm. She’s happy to do whatever Chocola wants, as she loves her twin sister a lot.

Conclusion

Most people do tend to buy VN’s for the story, but I believe an exception can be made for Nekopara’s distinct and stunning art style. Even though you do have to pay extra for the NSFW DLC, I would still suggest in buying it in order to enrich your experience! For reference, it took me about 8 hours to complete the game, but I did leave it on auto and waiting for every line to finish before moving on to the next line.

Introduction

Amnesia Memories, truly one of the best otome games I’ve ever had the pleasure of coming across. Incidentally, I heard of the game when purchasing a Neptunia bundle which included this game. Everything about this game is perfect, from the soundtracks, to the beautiful art, and to the flawless voice acting.
In Amnesia Memories, you play as the self-insert nameless Heroine, who, for unknown reasons, has lost her memories. Aided with the help of Orion, she must tread carefully. When waking up with no recollection of who you are, you can’t trust everyone you come by so easily.

Pros

- Key events in the storyline differ from every route. I personally love this, as there’s no common route, and every route completely differs from other routes.
- Some routes are much more intense than your average otome game, and in all honesty, I love this. It makes the game seem less cliche and more unique.
- An immersive experience, you'll soon find yourself growing attached to the characters very quickly.
- Fully voiced lines. Every single line is voiced, except from the Heroine. While there aren't any English voices, the Japanese voices are still really well done.

Cons

I believe three of the routes should have had some sort of trigger warning. For those who don’t care about spoilers, I’ve listed the trigger warnings below.

Heart World - One of the bad ends include a character being stabbed to death. And I think another bad end includes a character being drowned to death too.
Diamond World - Yandere, Manipulation, Heroine being caged against her will
Joker World - Yandere, Characters being: Choked to death, stabbed to death. I can’t remember all the deaths, but all the bad ends include characters dying.

Other than that, there's really nothing in terms of cons.

Love Interests

I recommend playing the game in this order, from least intense to most intense:

Spade World -> Club World -> Heart World -> Diamond World -> ??? World

Spade World - Kent, a university graduate who due to how his parents raised him with the belief that everything can be solved with logic, he has a very difficult time expressing his emotions.

Club World - Ikki, a playboy who tends to love flirting with girls. However, his relationships never seem to last more than three months.

Heart World - Shin, the heroine’s childhood friend. A social outcast who tends to be more reserved and serious. However, upon learning about his past, will the heroine be able to trust him? Or will she be endangered the more she pursues him?

Diamond World - Toma, also the heroine’s childhood friend. A laid back and relaxed older brother figure. He tends to care for the heroine deeply, but perhaps a little too deeply.

??? World - I’m sorry, I’m not spoiling this route. You unlock this route by achieving all the good ends and while that may seem like a lot of effort, trust me, it’s well worth it. This route is by far one of my favourites!

Conclusion

Please, consider playing this game. It is well worth the money, and I assure you, you won't regret it! I spent 13 hours straight playing the game!

Introduction

Again, there's not really much to say. Only positive side to this are the 1,800 acheivements you can get from idling the game.

Pros

- Perfect for acheivement hunters.

Cons

- Pretty much everything in all honesty.

Conclusion

Get this is you want the achievements. Otherwise, there's nothing really great about the game.
