After Ezio Auditore's successful trilogy, Ubisoft decides to introduce a new main character, in a new historical location, from the Age of Revolution this time, where the soldiers no longer run after you with swords and daggers, but with muskets and flintlocks, while at you from any street corner. Four games later, Assassin's Creed moves from Asia and Europe, across the Atlantic Ocean, all the way to the American colonies, namely the cities of Boston, New York and the Frontier between them.

Desmond Miles' next ancestor to be explored is Connor Kenway, a Native American who wants the freedom of his people's tribe and the expulsion of the British Crown from the colonial territory. Desmond's objective in these Animus sessions is to find the key that will unlock The Grand Temple where he is hiding from Abstergo, while going on missions to retrieve some power sources for this Temple, in the present. These missions are very well crafted, taking place during his breaks from the Animus, showing how Assassins can operate in the field of contemporary times.

At first, Desmond relieves the memories of Connor's father, Haytham Kenway, who sailed to the colonies in the hope of finding the Great Temple as well, using a key medallion. Haytham is a noble rank type, having formal manners and charisma, which can be deduced by his gestures, fighting movements and his punctuality in fulfilling his mission. Connor on the other hand, being a native American, is a stoic, straight forward and not a very emotive character. Because he was raised as a hunter, his methods are very aggressive and precise. Although he starts as, a rather, naive character, his later interactions with his father slowly bring him to the cruel reality that he has to face.

ACIII has a new Engine, namely Anvil Next, where parkour, stealth and combat have been renewed. Parkour is more simplified, meaning climbing and jumping are united in a single "High Profile" button, reducing the chances to accidentally leap off of your current location. There are still side and back ejects, but they can be done only after Connor catches a ledge. Also, parkour down has some improvements, Connor being able to drop down from a single button press, or jump down from object to object by focusing the camera down to the closest platform/ledge. As for what is new in the animation aspects of this parkour, Connor can now climb and free run in the Frontier's trees, climb through narrow cliff cracks (which is inspired by real rock climbing techniques), and vault smoothly over small fences and obstacles. There are also building shortcuts, where you can watch a very short free-run cinematic of the Assassin going through interiors, helping you cut some distance to your objectives (or chain a very nice parkour montage).

Stealth has new assassination animations, but the detection time is somewhat broken due to the new notoriety system, which requires a higher level of patience; or you can choose to go all out in the massive group of British soldiers, finisher animations being so satisfying that it gives the most immersive adrenaline feeling.

And now I reached the combat section: by pressing a single button, Connor and Haytham can counter attack the enemy, choosing between kill, disarm or throw; each enemy being vulnerable to one of these moves and invincible to the others, so be careful what soldier you want to choose for kill streak next.

Assassin recruits do return, but this time they are established characters the universe, with their own name and a story, that motivates them to ally with Connor and help the Assassin cause. Each recruit unlocks a special ability, having to choose different approach combinations such as covert escort, lure, riot and a few others that are quite creative as well.

At the end of the day, Assassin's Creed III is an underrated game and a fitting successor to the Ezio trilogy, with a tragic story about a Native American yearning for freedom and the safety of his people. During the exploration, there are conversations with different characters that cover a good part of their motivations and thoughts, but they are not precisely shown, having the player himself discover them. Also, the modern day section is the best so far and deserves a full revisit from time to time.
