Honest to god I think this is one of the worst PAID indie games I've ever played. This game is plagued with fundamental issues that would require the entire game to be remade to fix.

Let's start with my BASIC complaints:
The game is filled with empty, blank hallways that you run through. Fine enough if you didn’t stretch them out for miles at a time with no place to LOSE an enemy.

The Oni is horrible, it’s the same speed as you, chases you NONSTOP, and the only way to lose it is to hide in a locker. What do you do if the Oni is RIGHT on your tail? Hide in a locker, right? Nope, if you’re trying to do deathless you might as well say goodbye to your run because it is near impossible to lose the Oni if it is on your ass. You better hope to god you’re skilled enough to loop him around a table to lose him or you’re dead.

Now for everything else:
This game has horrible and confusing puzzle design. You’ll spend easily 20 minutes on each little puzzle trying to figure out how it works. IF you even figure out how it works.
An example being the clocks, while I had only a little bit of trouble with them, you’ll never guess you have to BACK UP from the clock to see it clear enough to actually discern the code from the time displayed.
--
It REALLY doesn’t help when you’re in a tight space WITH THE ONI and you’re trying to solve (a) puzzle WITHOUT dying and get caught anyways after trying to hide. Then, you get sent ACROSS the map into another locker where you have to run all the way back to the puzzle you were doing just to die again. Sometimes you have to start an entire puzzle again.

The Oni can hear through solid walls, if you’re VERY far away in the map and you pass by the Oni on the other side of a wall, he’ll book it STRAIGHT to where you were when he last heard you

This game is locked to 30 FPS and has the worst mouse smoothing I’ve ever had the displeasure of experiencing. Not only does it cause discomfort when playing, but the mouse smoothing started bugging out during the end of my last play session and kept jolting and flipping me around (the same mouse bug that plagues SCP Containment Breach).

The sound? Awful. They replaced the iconic chase theme with an awful screeching noise that plays anytime the Oni chases you, on top of that the player makes a GOD AWFUL breathing noise 24/7 which makes you think you have a stamina meter. Nope! There’s no stamina, if you run for too long your character will begin breathing very loudly but thank god the developer did ONE good thing and added an option to turn down the breathing. However, the player voice volume setting only turns down the BREATHING and not the heartbeat in the background. For me, personally, the sound of a heart beating makes me squirm so I would REALLY appreciate if it was added to the player voice volume setting

Again, I’m bringing up that this game is visually boring and brings nothing to the table. It feels like the developer who made this game just slapped some store assets into a Unity project, put a blue monster in it and called it Ao Oni. I came into this game with lower expectations because this game was being published by LiTMUS. Even though I’m a huge fan of the franchise, This is genuinely as bad if not worse than Ao Oni 2 and I thought THAT game was bad.

TLDR; Bad puzzles, bad AI, bad visuals, bad sound, bad everything. 0/10

honestly i played ch1 and midly liked it, played ch2 and hated it, and played ch3 and this is really good
some of the puzzles are infuriating sometimes and the game is a bit too dark with default gamma but other than that the art for this game is amazing

I heard people didn't really like this game and I'm not really sure why. The game is alright and the story is ok. It's kind of a 'grind' if you want all the gear though but it's a really fun game to just open for a bit and then close.

Early Access Review
Now that the game has had ONE patch since release, I'd like to say the game has improved a ton and is enjoyable. While you do still need to be a nerd to learn the games ins & outs to play efficiently and beat the game with good rankings, a lot of my old review does not apply and I am happy to say most of the issues I had with the game have been fixed along. I now DO recommend this game. The only thing I'm not so happy about is the lack of any updates (last update was a month ago and this is before a fourth trial was added) and small cosmetic updates would have been appreciated!

Note:
The Outlast Trials does require you to have quick decision making skills so please buy it with that in mind
Also you can read my original review if you want, it is below :)

----------------------------

I'm going to be 100% honest. I love this game, but it has serious flaws that just makes the experience so mute compared to Outlast 1 & 2.
First, the singleplayer. I've played this game exclusively solo and I can without a doubt say that the AI has regressed since Outlast 1 and even Outlast 2. Either half the time you're waiting for an enemy to leave or they just camp the objective and you have to play cat and mouse with them so they move away for long enough you can get something done.

The first exam is hard, and a good challenge for singleplayer, but the second main exams are bullsh*t beyond comprehension. I really gave the final exams a try but they are next to impossible to complete solo. All main enemies in the area will camp the objective and if you're going for a higher than D rank (which is most likely what you're getting) you're f*cked because you can't distract them because if you do it goes on your testing report and you get penalized.

Now, I've TRIED to hide, even in the best circumstances it's about a 50/50 if I get found or not. Even if I haven't made any noise, and the noise stinger hasn't played, I will get found.

Now the things that really bug me. The dudes that hide in the closets and barrels. Most of the time you can't even see the visual cue they're there because either you're passing by or just looking for something else. They make no noise if you're running by and it because super tedious and annoying to deal with them where I just leave the trial and quit the game.

I understand Red Barrels went for something different with how the FPS camera is set up but it doesn't feel good at all. It feels like you're loosely in the shoes of whoever you're playing as and sometimes it's hard to read where you REALLY are (ex: sliding over a box to get away from someone) I could not tell you how many countless times I've thought I was completely out of the way of something and really wasn't so I either got hit, or died.

Too long kinda read;
AI camps objectives, aimlessly wanders. Bullsh*t hidden enemies that jump out at you. Singleplayer is terrible.

I honestly WOULD like this game if these issues weren't so apparent. The regular trials are fine but the average andy isn't going to be able to complete an exam on their own even though the game is ADVERTISED as singleplayer or multiplayer. It needs a heavy singleplayer rework for the exams.

this is genuinely one of the worst games i've played. is it a "worst game of all time"? no. but its still pretty bad
you'd have to be the son of god himself to go through an entire playthrough of this game without experiencing one bug or glitch
