Despite how much I personally have enjoyed playing Destiny 2, I do not think I can recommend that other people get into it. I picked up Destiny 2 as one of the first first person shooters that I've played, and I enjoy most of the game, despite a few fatal flaws that make it hard to get into and stay within the game. The first is that Destiny 2 is like every other MMO in that you must invest large amounts of time doing activities to get the good and great gear. If you stop playing regularly, the power level increases with each new expansion and you must spend time to get your old gear to power levels.

The second is the ever present issue of price. Each DLC is a somewhat substantial purchase and seems to garner less and less content each time. I have bought most of the expansions since I began playing, and Beyond Light was my breaking point for major expansions, as the removal of many of the planets for a large barren icy wasteland was an interesting game design choice. The season pass no longer rewards the premium in-game currency, now just giving out a second rate equivalent. To seal the deal, the vaulting of many of my personal favorite destinations has left the game feeling cramped and constrained to a few fun repeatable activities once you've put in enough time to do everything, which takes surprisingly little time. Most of the enjoyment after (and usually before) this point is derived from playing with at least one other friend, as it makes the grinding and many of the activities much easier. If you want a space themed looter shooter, Destiny 2 may not be for you.
