I cannot say enough good about the state of this game. It plays slow, purposeful, and rewarding. It's got a touch of souls-like difficulty in the bosses, it is unforgiving if you just try to stand still and auto attack to death.

The builds feel amazing when you find synergy, every class has high potential, itemization is so individualistic.... you feel good when you overcome a boss or Act.

I look forward to pouring hundreds of hours into this game. Easily the best ARPG I've sunk time into thus far.

OH! And the devs are letting you keep your purchased cosmetics from POE1!! Huh!? Devs rewarding their players??

Edit: 11/25/23

I decided to reinstall the game after about 6 months of blissful ignorance. I go in, 1vtrios. Feeling good after dropping one team. Wait for the map to unfold and find the bounty. Push in, taking a couple picks here and there. Pick the last person on one team and then wipe the last team. I pickup bounty and make my way to extract.

Oh snap, there's a solo camping extract. No big deal. I got this, feeling good. Quick scan for position check, orange flame, come out to site in and BAM. Hunt logo loading screen. Next 10 minutes go by, game is popping different load states and messages. Collecting mission bag pops.

Finally the game details load. 150 bounty and 2 kills. That's it. My nVidia highlights logged the 7 kills I actually got. Hunt? 2 kills. 150 bounty. 0 hunter XP.

♥♥♥♥ this pile of ♥♥♥♥ game. And all 1100 hours I put into it. This game is in the sorriest state I have ever seen a formerly great game. Because of the focus only on monitization, battle passes, and ♥♥♥♥ events pushed down your throat every 15 days. I will not give this game another minute of my time or care. ♥♥♥♥ this game and ♥♥♥♥ Crytek.

Editing once more after I retired for the past few months. I have notched over 1k hours in the game. For the first half, easily, this was my favorite game and one of the best shooters I had played. Then there was a change. There was a dev stream where they talked about a change in monetization strategy. I thought, "oh no." but also, "I understand".... the game is a one-time purchase and relied on skin sales. I get it, you gotta make money to keep the game going and servers and art concept, and story, etc...

Fast-forward about a year... Events happen every few months with ZERO story behind the world narrative. Skins are produced at a sickening pace and have increased almost 200% in cost for bundles. The battlepass is a typical battlepass.... but the grind is disgusting. Three month events where if you do not play 3 hours per day during the entire 90 days, you WILL miss something.

Ok. Now let's talk about where that money is going.... I have no clue. I don't. I don't think anyone does. It isn't the servers, now having desync boxes and high ping every day I play(ed) on NA servers... which have never had this issue. It's not the narrative.... no new boss, no deep lore, no new map..... just new skins that have zero connection to "the bayou". New weapons? A couple.... but they are just variants of existing weapons and bleed over into other weapons. For instance, the new springfield pushes away the mosin. The new martini pushes away the berthi, etc...

The evens are haphazardly thrown together to stretch you into a grind fest for 3 months, rest for 2, then back at it again with another shallow push for blood bond sales with no real "feeling" behind what you are doing.

Which brings me to the next dead horse (ha)... cheaters. I hate when I'm right about things. But let's be honest... ESP is a massive problem in hunt. There have been clips of people using it, and a quick 5 minute google search turns up several results for "how to". Nothing being done about it, because these are typically most present during events and "sales"... ah, more copies being sold and record high event participation as these new accounts are made and used solely for the event. "working as intended" it seems.

I can't lament enough, about how sad I am that this game has reached this state. I loved this game. So much. I pushed myself more in this game than any other shooter I have ever played. I wanted top rank. I wanted to be better. I wanted to know everything about every hunter, weapon, boss, etc... Now it's a husk of itself. A shallow money-grab, dressed in a thrown together garbage bag shell of it's former self.

Do not play this game. Do not buy it. Do not buy the skins or the battlepass.... don't let yourself fall in love with what this COULD be and used to be.... it'll only hurt you.

Previous versions of the review below:

The below is still unbelievably true. But I have to say, I cannot recommend a game more. I have over 800 hours in at time of writing and will always come back, no matter how angry I get at this game. It's an incredible aesthetic, the music is exceptional, the artwork for traits has flair that I have never seen before. I love the game, in all it's faults. The devs are incredibly interactive. And Bence is probably the best social media manager I have seen.

The game was great. For a long time. But then, they shifted event focus, It got rushed. Server maintenance, actual game mechanics, latency, hit registry errors, etc... This is all a massive problem right now and rather than addressing ANY of it, they run new events and focus on altering how to balance blood bond purchases. I understand they have to make money to keep the game going, but they are hemorrhaging players because of these issues. It is catastrophically bad on Europe servers, but even NA is seeing the issues. Once the change to "trades" became a thing, it seems like everything went to hell. Not sure what they changed by allowing "more accurate trades" but it seems like a natural latency and "assumption" was added to every fight. Causing hit registry issues and false trades.

Updating review after a couple patches. Now, not only are there server stability issues, but the player base itself massively abuses quickplay MMR de-ranking. It's widely known, widely used, and creates a massively toxic environment to everyone trying to play the game. Quickplay should not impact MMR at all for bounty hunt. But it does. You can queue into quickplay and just run around, guns blazing, letting people rip you until you are sitting comfy in bottom 3 or even 2 if you really want. Queue up as a smurf with 0 impact to your KDA, and go blast newer or lower rank players.

Updating once more after 1.9.

SURPRISE! most things were not fixed. There is still massive desync issues. Several discrepancies with damage output (and still no charts to know how much damage you did in a fight). Example: downed a duo, so at most each had 125 health remaining. Shot in the body twice with a winfield (at least 80 dmg each hit) and they lived. Fancy that. Minimum 160 damage to someone with at MOST 125 health, and they lived. In a total of 7 games today, every single encounter in every game had multiple hit box and damage output issues.

This is all after a "massive" 1.9 patch to address all of these issues that caused them to lose 30% of their player base in a single quarter. Still glaring issues that the current event "covers up" by having you just assume everyone else is "better than you", but you can never know if the loses are YOUR fault or that of the game....and given the constant server issues, desync, hitbox issues, hit registry issues, and inconsistent damage output...... odds are it is the GAME itself that is in a ♥♥♥♥ state. Not you. But if they gave us charts, then we'd know...and we wouldn't play anymore.... or buy their weekly release of skins.

Revision 8/18/24

This game is absolute ♥♥♥♥. They spent so much time and money on 1896 and spent ZERO of it on servers. ♥♥♥♥ this trash.
