Picked this game up on a whim and ended up playing for 8 hours the first day. Super fun, super addicting.

Controls like Asteroids, not Geometry Wars, which took a minute to get used to but ends up working out quite well.

There are a good number of different weapons / gear / mods that allow for a ton of crazy fun builds, and I haven't yet unlocked all of the upgrades even.

UPDATE: I have not gone back to try the game out again, however I am told that the game has ultrawide support and runs much better now, so I'm updating to positive.

The year is 2018 and this game has no ultra-wide support.

I'm running on a 1080ti and am getting an average framerate of ~60, with frequent dips to 50, even low 40's.

The game doesn't look anywhere near good enough to justify that.

I will gladly update this to a positive review, if they fix their poor optimization.

I was repeatedly and consistently surprised and in awe of just how amazing this game was from start to finish. I played for free on a friends machine, and had to purchase it myself just because Playdead really deserves my money.

It's the most innovative shooter I've played in years.

That being said, It's very very short for the price. I finished it in just over 1.5 hours. Pick it up on sale.

You know that feeling when you turn off the lights at the bottom of the stairs, and you start running up because it feels like something is chasing you?

That's this game. Except worse, because there IS something chasing you, and it's a big, scary alien.

I waited until the game was at a good sale price before picking it up, however after completing it, I would say it would have been worth it at full price.

If you haven't seen the movie, or if it's been a while, I highly recommend watching it before playing. The audio and visual elements of the game are beautifully crafted, and pull directly from the film, with many subtle (and some not-so-subtle) tips of the hat to the original cinematic masterpiece.

The graphics are very pleasing, the engine is wonderfully optimized, and should run very well even without a top of the line PC.

My personal favorite part of this game is the audio. The musical score does a fantastic job of building tension, and seamlessly informs you when danger is lurking, not only without breaking immersion, but while adding to it. What could have been a boring 30 second wait for a tram, becomes an anxiety filled moment of "Please please get here faster" as the creepy string music continues to rise, while you can hear the Alien stomping around somewhere nearby. Which brings me to the next element this game uses excellently:

URGENCY. There are many "mini-puzzles" in this game that you will need to complete in order to activate a computer, open a door, etc. However, while you are completing these simple puzzles, the game does not pause. Need to read through a computer terminal to find a PIN number? The Alien is still hunting for you. Need to manually punch in that PIN number to open a door? You'll need quick fingers because the Alien could be stomping up right behind you. Even while using a save point, or crafting items, the Alien continues to hunt. Some people may not like these elements, but for me they worked perfectly as intended, building tension and a sense of urgency.

The Alien's AI is very smart, and worse (or better, depending on how you look at it): random. There will be no set path it will follow, so you will never feel like you're completely safe (and you're not). Even hiding in a locker, or under a desk, if the alien was nearby when you entered, it may have seen where you went.

Altogether I highly recommend this game for any fans of the Horror / Survival genre's, as well as any fans of the Alien movies.

Played it over the free weekend, and had a blast! Ended up buying it. Great fun if you just want to go blow up some zombies. The gore is fantastic. Excited to see the rest of the additions they make before full release.
