The controls don't work. The game isn't terrible, there's a decent framework here to build upon, but the controls don't work. I'm sure this is just a product of many changes going on behind the scenes, but the controls don't work. This leaves the game essentially unplayable in its current state because the controls don't work.

Death Stranding is a very unique game, and while I do think it has a lot of potential, you can't review a game based on what it could have been.

This game's fatal flaw is its unbearable amount of exposition. It takes place in a broken world full of monsters and mysteries that you somehow have to piece back together, but this information is relayed to you by what feels like a teacher in a classroom reading pages out of a textbook. The dialogue feels stilted, with characters explaining things to each other they should already know considering they've existed in this world before we started playing. The worldbuilding is amateurish and hamfisted with little to no nuance, and instead of instilling a sense of curiosity and discovery, it makes me feel like the writers themselves didn't know what they were talking about.

I believe the source of this game's shortcomings is Hideo Kojima. Although he has a prolific history of excellence, it's fairly agreed upon his more recent projects have weaker narratives compared to the rest of his catalogue, with MGSV being particularly bad. After his falling out with Konami, Sony funded and gave Kojima complete creative control over his next project, and while I don't want to say he surrounded himself with yes men, it sure feels like Kojima was rarely told "no" during the production of Death Stranding.

He clearly has little understanding of restraint or pacing. Almost every scene in this game could be halved in length and would still feel too long. Even when a character literally says "get to the point", the scene will continue to drag out. The vast majority of information given to you will be repeated at some point, which is clearly an attempt to help you remember or understand what the writers knew would be convoluted and confusing. The issue is without an explanation, it remains convoluted and confusing. Having it fed to you a second, third, or even fourth time doesn't help you understand any better, it just makes you want to skip the dialogue because you've heard it all before.

The names of almost everything in the game are flat out moronic, as they're all based around some stupid pun or quip. It becomes incredibly distracting once you realize it and how clumsy it all is. Some examples include how it's never actually explained what "DOOMS" stands for, it's just called that so someone can say "DOOMS-day", or the fact the protagonist's name is "Sam Porter Bridges", which is like being named "William Deliveryman FedEx" in our world.

Higgs is a truly awful antagonist. His face looks stupid (sorry Troy Baker), his dialogue sucks, his motivation is weak, and his abilities seem to change at random. I honestly can't think of more to say about him other than that. He's incredibly two dimensional.

Cliff is far more interesting, yet still underdeveloped and suffers from being a vehicle of plot convenience. For example, he calls his own child "BB" and not their name, which would be like calling your newborn child "the patient" at the hospital. This is to conceal a major plot twist, but why didn't he just call it "my child" or "my son" or "my baby"? It would still conceal the twist all the same.

There isn't a single line of dialogue that feels natural. Every character behaves like they're neurodivergent, and it's possible that's actually canon due to the separation of America, the dysfunctional nature of what remains of society, and the lack of human interaction these people have been subjected to, but it still feels weird nonetheless.

The game constantly breaks the fourth wall, ruining any illusion of immersion. Sam, the protagonist played by Norman Reedus, talks about how awesome the real world TV show "Ride With Norman Reedus" is, and interacts directly with the player in the private room. I'll admit these scenes made me chuckle, but they happen far too often for me to truly immerse myself in the world. It's not uncommon for a Hideo Kojima production to include meta commentary, but it's usually not this egregious.

The vehicle physics are terrible. I can't find the words to describe just how bad they truly are. It's almost unacceptable how bad they are.

I will admit the gameplay is very unique. I can't think of a single game like it, and while it's not the most fun thing I've ever played, there's definitely a level of enjoyment to be had with solving what I would call "navigational puzzles". The story is contrived and cliche, but the gameplay does have its moments.

Death Stranding isn't a terrible game. There's a non-zero chance I play it again someday, and I will very likely be playing the sequel. But all in all, I wouldn't recommend it... to most people.

Incredibly underrated. A phenomenal game with some of the best hand-to-hand combat of all time. Extremely satisfying, fun, and rewarding to master. The recent Arenas update added a ton of content, making even full price a steal. Strongly recommended if you enjoy action games and a good challenge.

94% of Elden Ring will easily be in your top 10 favourite games, and the remaining 6% is garbage. It's like FromSoft had a "bring your kid to work day" and let them design some of the encounters.

Edit: After beating the game a second time I 100% stand behind my original statement, but would still like to add some more specific details to the review.

Bosses where you have to fight multiple enemies at once are awful. The Valiant Gargoyles in Siofra Aqueduct are probably one of the hardest fights in the game yet only drop 30,000 runes, compared to Malenia who I found EASIER and drops 480,000.

The music in this game is pretty forgettable. There's one song I can recall after playing through the game twice and that's Radagon's theme. Throughout my second playthrough I was constantly thinking of Final Fantasy XVI's soundtrack and how much more eager I would be to face impossible odds time and time again with a more prominent soundtrack.

The final final boss, or the second phase of the final boss if you prefer, is HILARIOUSLY bad! Truly awful, one of the worst final bosses of all time! I cannot stress just how terrible it is. How great the first phase is definitely saves it from souring the experience, but man is it bad. Edit 2: They actually patched this!

An incredibly fun shooter with a decent story and a great soundtrack.
One of my favourite games of all time.

I DO NOT recommend this game (as of right now), however I can't bring myself to click "Not Recommended" due to the obvious amount of hard work the developer continues to pour into this game.

I remember the first time I played GTTOD. I had trouble understanding what the goal was, but the mechanics were there and it was pretty fun. When I played it again 6 months later, it was a completely different game. The primary objective had been changed so I no longer understood what to do, but I could tell the mechanics had been refined and that the game was making progress. When I played it again six months after that, it was once more a completely different game and I had to relearn what I needed to be doing in order to progress. Another 6 months later and you guessed it, everything has changed again and I have no idea how to play the game anymore.

GTTOD doesn't seem to understand exactly what it wants to be. While the core gameplay of extremely fast paced first-person combat with parkour elements has always been a constant, everything else seems to be stuck in a state of flux that leaves me confused each time I come back to the game. Is this a wave shooter? A roguelike? An arcade score attack? Are there bosses? Is there an ending? Can I unlock new weapons or abilities? I have no answers to any of these questions before playing the game.

As of right now, I have no idea what the core gameplay loop is or what my motivation to continue playing is. You shoot enemies, make it to an orange door, shoot enemies around the door until it opens, go through it into a new level, then repeat. It's structured similarly to a roguelike but doesn't have any of the clear progression that traditional roguelikes would have, such as multiple distinct level themes, multiple bosses, and an ending (usually with an option to either roll the credits or loop the run and keep playing). In fact, I would say it doesn't seem to have any progression whatsoever? Everything seems to be unlocked from the beginning (except for starter loadouts which are superfluous) and I don't feel rewarded or any kind of satisfaction for making it through levels.

Another issue is the game's lack of a good tutorial and arbitrary design choices that make it difficult to understand what certain items or abilities do, or even WHAT items or abilities you currently have because their icons aren't distinctive or descriptive. Weapons and items can be purchased from boxes in the environment but the environments are usually so large, the boxes so small, your movement so fast, and the lighting so dim that you often just fly past them (literally) without even registering their existence. This causes multiple problems, for one your gameplay style stagnates because you can't find any of the options to remedy that, and two when you run out of ammunition you're screwed because you simply have no idea where any other weapons are. Perhaps this wouldn't be as big of an issue if levels weren't as dark as they are, but as is every level I've seen (which is only 3 despite making it more than 3 levels) are all essentially pitch black.

I hope this game finds and becomes exactly what it wants to be, and becomes extremely successful. But right now, it's hard to recommend because of how frequently and drastically it feels like it changes, and how unclear the objective or point of the game really is. If at some point you fall in love with GTTOD, who's to say it will remain that way? It might be a completely different game in 6 months...

You'd think after literally 20 years of being one of the top multiplayer shooter franchises in the world they'd figure out how to program competent netcode

- Long and boring tutorial
- Extremely blurry graphics, over sharpened, forced TAA
- Uses fholger's FSR .dll commercially without permission or credit
- Misleading trailer, graphics have been downgraded and combat has almost no physics interactions

Basically the game is just slowly walking through dark stone corridors until a skeleton or goblin appears. Environments are drab and boring, enemy variety is very limited. The combat is nothing like Blade & Sorcery. I didn't try the co-op, can't imagine the game would be much better with a friend though.

Edit: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ what is that price?! What are these guys smoking thinking that's a fair price for what you get?

Imagine if they made a whole game based around the melee combat in Elder Scrolls games. I was expecting something a little more complex, maybe something with directional attacks like For Honor, Chivalry, Mordhau, etc., etc..
