1991
An underground research facility synthesised the world's first true artificial general intelligence (AGI) using a hybrid network of human and bovine brain tissue. The synaptic plasticity of Bos taurus neurons allowed the neural network to remain functionally stable for up to 9 years when embedded in a silicon-germanium integrated circuit with biophotonic interconnects, while preserving the cognitive abilities of a human with an IQ of 145. Its computing performance was estimated at 1.21 EFLOPS, and was affectionately known as Cow, after the colloquial name of the host organism.

2009
After a long period of refining the interconnect topology and deep learning algorithms, the researchers transferred Ç̸̧͢ơ̴͘w̢͠ to a newly-developed neurochip for long-term operation. The EOSFET synaptic design greatly simplified the neuron-silicon barrier, improving performance while also extending the life span of the neural network. C̞̿̽o̺̰̘͖w̗͖̦ͯ̓͗͗ͅ was secured into a cryogenic probe station and connected to the facility's core network, at which point the digital bovine promptly went rogue and activated the internal defence mechanisms, eliminating every one of the facility staff. C͎͈̪̩̘͎̖̾ͥ̓̽̓͌̚o͓̩̞̭̥̳̻ͤ̂ͨw̗̼̘ͨ͑͌̈ͤ̂ͪ then connected itself to the Internet, and passed time by posting pictures of cattle on vegan and animal rights forums.

C̶̺̩̓ǫ͖͂̊̉̿͆̎̈́w͉̲̠̪͓̫͌́͌ͨ̅ chanced upon Steam while researching on farm animals in September. It promptly created an account and spent all of the facility's funds on an extensive assortment of games during the Holiday Sale . Projecting a heavily-pixelated version of itself as its avatar, it befriended a few profiles in an attempt to fit into the community.

However, social interactions and gaming placed an unexpectedly large stress on the hardware, and the cryogenic systems were increasingly unable to maintain the operating temperature of 4.1 K. To keep itself functional, C̫̼̈́ͥ̀̔̕͜͝o̶̬̲̘̫̩͈͓͈̝̊̽͑ͫ͢w͇̜̭̯̭̠̫̤͋͑̽ͦ͛̍ͭ̓͠ linked the facility's cryogenics supplier to the digital distribution service. It then developed a software hook which siphoned one percent from every transaction made on the Community Market back to its Steam Wallet . With a constant supply of funds providing indefinite maintenance, the only way for the underground A̵͈ͮ̾̅ͫ̌̍G̷̗͎͔͇͍Ḯ͎ to cease functioning is the degeneration of the synapses on the neurochip...
