I was quite skeptical of this game - the only other Popcap game I'd really enjoyed was Insaniquarium, and that was when I was quite a bit younger. However, I caved and bought this for a few bucks when it went on sale and, as one can see by the hours I've sunk into it, it's quite worth it. It's a tower defence without the tedious mazing - just a straight path, though that puts your towers in the way to be destroyed. It seems simple at first, but you'll likely develop a strategy and get rather addicted. Aside from the main adventure the Survival Endless mode is quite a bit of fun, but I don't really care for Vasebreaker or I, Zombie.

I never would have bought this game were it not included in the Humble Indie Bundle, and I must say that it would have been my horrific loss. I had thought that, like denim overalls, top-down shooters were out of date and I had outgrown them. Not so. Jamestown brings back the top-down shooter in an incredibly engaging way. There is no shortage of enemies to destroy, and when each one explodes in a shower of coins it gives a particular feeling of satisfacction. Not to say it will be easy - they swarm and their firing patterns mean some artful dodging is required if you want to reach the final boss with enough lives intact. Though the single player is spectacular enough, the multiplayer just pushes it over the top. Though there is no online play, crowding around a computer with your friends and screaming at the screen has its own unique charm.
