This game is a rip-off.
Not in how it works, or that kind of thing, no, it's a rip-off because it is marketed as a 'free game' but it's actually NOT a free game.
You get to play free for a 'trial period' which, once expired, doesn't allow you to even play practice games without a subscription.
I do not recommend this game for the sole reason of it's rather deceptive marketing.

What can I say about this game?

I've had it for a long while, but only recently got into it with some friends.
I really don't know what took me so long as this game is a blast for the creatively-minded.
I have spent more hours just messing about in this game than any other, in addition to keeping busy building ships, bases and mining operations, just to name a few things.

I really like this game, especially with friends, it really is a blast working together to survive the dangers and beauties of space and alien worlds, not to mention the occasional enemies, including pirates!

UPDATE

I've had a couple of years of pretty steady play in this game and have even delved into running my own dedicated server for this game. With that said, I'm adding to my review.

What I said in the original review stands, but I would like to add that the workshop for this game adds layers to the experience that I hadn't yet taken advantage of.
Though not required, I have since purchased ALL of the DLC for this game, I simply love 'eye candy' and that's exactly what the DLCs add to this game.
The workshop is a very sufficient alternative to buying the DLCs if you don't wish to buy them, but know this: Some of the blueprints on the workshop have been made with these DLCs and if you don't own them, then your downloaded blueprints may be rendered completely useless.
This is what partially encouraged me to get the DLCs as I could afford to do so.

The Space Engineers Modding Community is awesome.
I've added numerous mods/scripts to the game over the last 2 yrs. and the majority of them have made life just a bit easier in the SE world, but as with anything on the net, be careful what you download. Many of these mods are very useful, but there are also 'sloppy' mod makers out there that just throw their mods together with no real testing beforehand, and as such, can cause problems.
Read the descriptions carefully and if a mod does NOT have a description, I advise that you ignore it and move on, no matter how 'cool' it may look. (Personal experience speaking here)
The lack of a decent description is a clear indicator of a lazy author and/or a 'lazy-made' mod.
Steer clear of those to avoid potential issues.
I've come to prefer 'Quality of Life' (QoL) mods as they generally add to the experience without drastically changing the basic vanilla gameplay, at least not that much at any rate.

I've compiled a collection of my favorite Space Engineers mods and I will share the link here to help out any of you possible new players that may want to try some decent and well-made mods out in your games.

The Forest

An interesting survival game, but one I would not recommend playing solo.
There are an overwhelming amount of 'hazards' to deal with in this game, many of which are not easily dealt with on your own.
It's relatively easy to fend off attacks when there only a couple of attackers, but when they jump you at up to 10 on 1, it becomes almost impossible to survive the encounter.
You can access a developer console where the difficulty can be adjusted, but that feels too much like cheating, especially to someone who is a gaming 'purist', like myself.
I do, however, recommend this game in a co-op setting.
With teammates to help you deal with the natural hazards of the game, it becomes much more enjoyable and satisfying when you are able to accomplish something big, like completing a functional and defensible base with abundant resources close by.
On that note, I would recommend establishing two main bases, one in the Northern sector of the island and one in the Southern sector of the island. The reason for this, in my mind, is both areas contain resources needed to complete certain aspects of the game and you won't have to go far to find a defensible location to stand against the onslaught of cannibals that will randomly encircle and attack you on a whim.
Though the cannibals tend to be active at all times of the day or night, they tend to be more active and aggressive at night, so I would recommend not attempting any major forays at night.
As the old saying goes, "Make hay while the sun shines", because at night, it's a whole new ballgame, and there are no umpires.
The armor in this game is not totally useless, however, you will lose a certain percentage of your armor at almost every encounter with the cannibals. This forces you to have to almost constantly make more armor in order to keep from being overwhelmed by these beasties. Bone armor is certainly the easiest armor to acquire, as each dead cannibal will yield 6 bones and a skull once the body is burned, which makes one complete piece of bone armor, so basically, the more of them you kill, the more heavily armored you can become. There are other types of armor that can be acquired, but the resources to make it are less plentiful and the challenges to get those resources are greater.
Overall, this is a challenging survival game, which is much more 'survivable' if you have a couple of friends to help you out when things get tough, which they often do in this game.
In a co-op setting, I give this game a solid 10/10.
In a solo setting, I give this game a modest 6/10, due to the somewhat over-done difficulty of surviving alone under the default settings.

What to say?
First off, this game is not finished as of this writing, so it's still in development, so expect to see bugs.
This game is a survival game, first and foremost, so get ready to do a lot of stuff besides 'sailing the seven seas'.
You will need shelter from the weather, you'll need fresh water and food. You'll need to gather resources to make everything that you'll need to survive.
You'll then need to gather more resources to build your first decent ship.
You'll need gold to hire crew and to build bigger, better ships. This will require you to sail to, and explore other nearby islands in search of treasure. You will also need to take animals for buffs (monkey buffs health, as an example) and to use as 'pack animals' to haul resources from your farmhouses, lumber mills, mines, etc.
While this game is a challenge on solo players, I find it most enjoyable with friends. Not only can they help build up a settlement, or home base, if you will, but can help you sail your ship, search for buried treasure and fight off other pirates.
I do not recommend playing on the various 'official servers' as they have a real griefing problem right now.
Other players typically attack your settlement and/or ship and crew, while you are offline, forcing you to basically start over with nothing. If you want to play online, I highly recommend finding a good private server, with admins and moderators that actually do their jobs and keep the griefing to a minimum.
If you just want to play with friends, you can host a 'non-dedicated' session where just you and your friends can fight off AI threats and play in peace, far away from the spoiled brats that seem to permeate these kinds of games.
However you choose to play, I feel that if you are into pirates and sailing the seas looking for buried treasure, then this is just what the doctor ordered.
I recommend this game to anyone with a love of the old days of wooden sailing ships and high seas adventure.
It can, at times, get monotonous, but it also has many rewards.

A fun game with lots of courses, and a bunch of very good courses on the workshop.
Well worth the few dollars that it costs.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew
------------------------

As a long time Star Trek fan, I found this game intriguing and the only thing that turned me off from it was the fact that when it was first released, it was VR only. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing what-so-ever against VR, but since I do not own any VR equipment, that initially ruled this game out of my library.

Fast forward to today and we now have a 'non-VR' version. This was all the encouragement that I needed to give this game a try.

As of this writing, I only have about 13 hrs into this game, and most of that was just getting a 'feel' for how everything worked. Once I learned the basic controls, it became much more fun. It did take me a couple of sessions to figure out how the 'voice command' system works, but brother when I did, that made this game just that much better.
In a default install, the voice command system is activated by pressing and holding the 'T' key and then 'barking your orders'.
Speaking of 'voice commands', this system adds a whole new dimension to the game.
You can play solo, with an AI crew and issue voice orders to them just like you would a 'live' crew, making the immersion just that much better. One thing that I should point out about the voice command system is that, while you do have some flexibility with how you say the commands, the AI typically only respond to 'specific' commands, such as "Full Stop" and "Scan target". I did get the helmsman to intitate a warp jump by giving the order to "step on it", which was a nice touch, allowing me a certain 'style' to my command, but that kind of thing doesn't work with every command, so there are limitations to how 'stylish' you can get with your orders. Just keep that in mind when playing with the AI crew.
You can also 'chain' simple commands together. I gave the orders "Full stop, Scan target" and was pleasently surprised when my AI helmsman slowed to a stop while my tactical officer began her scans of the target. I also learned that this doesn't work for EVERY command. More complicated commands need to be issued separately otherwise the AI tend to become confused and start asking you to repeat your orders, so chain commands carefully.

If you are just starting out with this game, I highly recommend that you keep to the Aegis and not mess with the Original Enterprise right off the bat. Using it is a bit more complicated and is recommended for experienced to advanced captains and crew. Most of the controls aren't as 'well-marked' as they are on the Aegis, and that makes them difficult to find for manual input, as well as changes how some voice command orders can be used.
I have the Next Generation DLC, but have not yet tried my hand at commanding the Enterpris D just yet, but I am looking forward to it, and like the TOS Enterprise, some of the controls and systems are different and will take a little 'getting used to' before embarking on those dangerous missions.

I've not had the opportunity to play this game with a 'live crew' yet, and I think that this is probably where this game's strength is, in the teamwork of a live crew. It's been a bit difficult to find other players with experience that want to play a 'serious' game. I think that I'm just about the only one in my group of friends who owns this game, so finding online games with live players can be a bit difficult. Most online players already have their own crews so finding a game that allows a random player to join is a bit tough. I can understand why though. You don't want some random troll joining your crew only to have them blatantly disobey orders and plow your shiny new ship into that asteroid, simply because they can.
My best advice would be to find a community group and try to get in with them, then you have the opportunity to play with live players more and are less likely to get stuck on a 'troll ship' with a bunch of idiots who only want to cause mayhem and grief...

Overall, I like this game.
It could use some expandability, like maybe some mission DLCs that could add to what you already get with the game, but since things in the included missions can change, you will never play the same mission, exactly the same way twice.
The ability to mod this game would be nice as well. To be able to add other ships with other missions attached, would be a nice touch as well.
I'm sure that there are some people out there who would love to play as one of the 'enemies' such as the Romulans or maybe even the Borg, but that seems to be just a dream at this stage. But who knows? Maybe someday we WILL be able to do this...

I would recommend buying this game on sale, I picked it up for $19.99 US on a sale and that's about the cheapest that I've seen it go for so far, so catch it on sale, grab 3 other friends and get them to buy it, crew your own ship and enjoy a nice little romp through the galaxy.

Where to start?
Well, this really IS a "friends" game, for one.
It does have a pretty good AI system, so playing against a computer civilization or two truly is a decent challenge, but I feel that it is at it's most fun when played with a friend or two.

I've played the Age of Empires (AoE for short) since the first iteration hit the store shelves back in the 90s and I own all 3, plus the DLCs, so I think I'm a pretty good judge of what's good about it and what might need a little bit of work.

If you know nothing what-so-ever about this game then I think I can sum it up for you rather simply.., it's kinda like chess in a wierd sort of way. You have to manage things carefully, build when it's profitable, scout constantly and build a massive army as quickly as possible. You also have to be a bit of a 'city planner' as well. You have to build with expansion in mind, as the more villagers and troops you create, the more houses you'll have to build.
You can't build ANYTHING without wood, so you have to have a thriving lumber industry, and let's not forget food production. You won't have many villagers or troops without a lot of food to keep them going.

This might sound like a lot of work, but trust me, it's far more fun to DO IT, than it is to read about doing it... lol
That's not all, there are the battles, now those are fun.
There's nothing quite like the feeling that you get when you have such a massive army that nothing your opponent does can stop you. Nice dream, but that isn't always the case...
If you don't keep 'current' on your technology research, you could find yourself with a massive, but poorly armed and armored army, at which point, your army will be rather quickly dispatched.
A battle between two similarly developed armies can be both a thing of beauty and a nail-biting nightmare, all at the same time. It's hard to describe here, so you'll just have to see it and experience it for yourself.

There's also the 'thought' factor.
You have to sometimes think your way around a situation and this keeps the ol' noggin sharp.., but don't worry, it don't make ya think too much! lol

All in all, this is a fun 'rainy day' or LAN party game.
It's equally entertaining regardless of whether your opponents are live or bots, though the bots can get a little predictable after you've played a certain level for a long time. The best way around this is to periodically change up the difficulty or map size, or both.
Playing with live players and/or friends can be more challenging than playing the AI, but depending on the difficulty setting you decide to play on, the AI can sometimes be much harder to beat than even a live player. It has the luxury of rarely (if ever) making a mistake. lol

Ok, I have to start off by saying this is one of the silliest games I've ever played.., but certainly not one of the worst.
This game is literally so much fun that you almost can't hate it.

You basically fight off horde after horde of undead pigs.
The waves become progressively harder and new bosses pop up periodically, but you also get new and upgraded weapons with the completion of each wave, just enough to make it through the next wave, so long as you can think on your feet.

This is sort of similar to the original Killing Floor in that you have a brief time between waves to heal, rearm and rethink strategies, but unlike Killing Floor, there appears to be no end in sight, but still, a fun game to play with your friends, just to see how far you can get before you are overtaken by 'Pork Oblivion'... lol

I haven't done a review in a while so please, bear with me here...

Stable Orbit
-------------
A single-player space station management simulator.

I'm partial to simulators, so I may be a bit biased, but here goes...
I have about 20 hrs. into this game and have, after several disasters, managed to get a nearly self-sustaining and stable station going, but it was hard as hell to figure out the best way to do that without either going broke or having the station break down and my crew die.
There is not a lot of action in this sim, you can follow the orbit and choose when to add on to the "core" or starting module of the station, but be careful what you build and when or you will go broke fast, and if you don't have atleast one lab and one crewmember, you cannot make any money.
Speaking of money, I think this sim starts you out just a bit on the low side. You start with a budget of 6000M which starts dropping immediately due to operational costs of the core in orbit. Since your money is slowly 'eaten away' by these hidden expenses, you will have to make your station habitable, with a functioning lab to make money, very quickly.
The key things for your lab to be habitable for crew is water, oxygen, food and power. If any one of these are missing in the early stages of your station construction, you will fail.

Overall, I like this sim, it's an early release, so it does need a little work, but the gameplay is very smooth and the graphics, while a little on the 'basic' side, have potential. The engine seems to be optimized well at this stage, I maintained a steady 60FPS in 1080p HD over my 20 hrs. on this game.
I'm not aware of any VR version of this game, though I think it might not be a bad idea, should the developers decide to go that route.
I've by no means reached an 'end-game' point in this game so there's really no way of saying how this game might end, but I see two possibilities:
1. You finally run out of money to maintain your creation and it comes crashing to Earth due to lack of maintenance.
2. You build a station so massive that you cannot keep it in orbit any longer, despite how much money you may have, and it eventually falls to Earth.

This sim is roughly based on the ISS (International Space Station) and the devs have said that the ISS was the inspiration behind this sim, so as you expand your station, you almost can't help but see some similarities to the ISS in the modules that you add on as you expand.
I have not yet unlocked everything, and I have seen some claims on the discussion page for Stable Orbit, that these don't seem to be 'unlockable', so who knows for sure, this is an early access beta afterall... lol

There are points in this sim where you basically will do nothing but keep an eye on things and assign contracts to your lab, so there are some 'boring' spots in it, other times, Murphy's Law kicks in and you are frantically trying to repair key systems and keep your station in orbit and your crew alive.

For concept: It has potential, so I give that an 8/10
For Graphics: Smooth and steady 60 FPS in 1080p HD (1920x1080 resolution). Models are sharp and look nice, the Earth and space textures, while looking somewhat realistic, don't really look realistic enough, at this stage in it's development.
Because of this, I give it a 9/10.
For replayability: Unless there are some more modules and design options in the works, I don't see any real replayability outside just repeating the design that lasted the longest... 5/10
Overall Design: The GUI is very easy to follow, not a lot of submenus to deal with and everything is spelled out rather simply. This sim is very easy to just 'pick-up and go' as far as the menus and controls are concerned, and yes, it appears to be controller compatible, though I haven't tried one out on it yet. 10/10

Overall Score: 8/10 (If you like simulators, that is..)
If you are a sim fan like me, I highly recommend that you give it a spin, or at the very least, keep an eye on it. I have a feeling it just may improve over time.

This was an "ok" game when I first got it, with the various mods, it was a good "rainy day" game.
You sit in the house and play all day because it's too crappy to go outside.

But, since the 1.5 Rescale Beta and now, the v1.5 Rescale Update, this thing has really got interesting.
Most mods still work on ATS, like trailer mods, truck mods (some do, some don't), gfx mods.., the only mods that I know for a fact that do not work as of this writing are map mods. Those will probably be back up and running in a couple of weeks.

At any rate, the Rescale has made the world bigger, and the time-scale longer, as a result of this, ATS now has a more realistic feel than it did before. Trips take longer, and the day and night cycle feels more "normal".
There have been numorous bug-fixes and overall improvements to the world in general. Even the AI seems to be better.

SCS has taken a good simulator and made it a great simulator.

EDIT: This simulator has undergone several updates since my initial review and it has only gotten better with these changes. New Mexico has been added and Oregon is due to be released soon, though an exact release date has yet to be announced. SCS has also hinted at some other surprises down the pipe, I can't wait to see what they have in store.

I said it before and I'll say it again, SCS has taken a good simulator and continues to make it a GREAT simulator.

EDIT: Oregon has been released as well as the Special Transport DLC and as an added bonus, SCS also just released the Volvo VNL truck and the Volvo dealerships to purchase it at. There is also talk of more trucks coming such as the Lonestar and possibly the Cascadia, among others, at some point next year.
This game is really starting to take shape and every DLC just adds to the enjoyment. We now have logging and steel industries among several others and as the states continue to be released, we should see even more industries, meaning many more types of loads to be hauled.
Oh, I almost forgot, we also got ownable trailers, which can be customized to match your company livery, or just match your favorite trucks. Your 'employees' can use the trailers or you can set them to 'private' and keep them to yourself, if you so choose.

All in all, this is one game that just keeps getting better with the passage of time, and I for one hope it's around for a nice, long time.

UPDATE: I'm updating this review again as this game just continues to improve.
We now have Utah and some other goodies are expected soon.
To be honest, I've never been as excited about a game as I am with this one. New states are starting to roll out and now we've just been treated to a sneak-peek at a new truck which should be available soon. I'm pretty sure that it's the International that a lot of us have been waiting for for so long, so all in all, this year has been a good one for ATS, and next year appears to hold even more surprises.
