On a technical note this port is a mess. It's incredibly unstable and the controls are awful if you're not using a controller and the game even required for me to install an external fix for it to even run. You should attempt to purchase this game on either Xbox or the Switch if possible. Consider this a review of the game's contents rather than its technical implementation.

The absolute highlight of the game has to be its characters. Everyone in the main cast is full of personality and the interactions between them are a joy to watch. Most of the side characters also fill these qualities, though not all of them. The main character, FBI special agent Francis York Morgan, everyone just calls him York, is the glue that holds these character interactions together. His dry humour and delivery, and his tendency to bleed obscure pop-culture knowledge into most conversations makes him a main character that's never boring to listen to and that’s never short on words.

The other big plus for the game is its story, which can at times feel nonsensical or even like a fever dream. The game definitely has some pacing issues with the story and feels quite rushed near the end, versus being very thin on actual content during the middle section. Ultimately though I found the story to be great fun and it managed to keep me interested in it for the entirety its time. The game takes place in rural America and follows the latest murder investigation in a series of murders across the States. From there the game incorporates the supernatural, detective work, slice of life, and a myriad of other aspects into the story.

The game also has a good soundtrack with a wide array of music for different occasions, and they are used liberally. This combined with the game's tendency to switch from suspension and surrealism to comedy or action multiple times during a single cutscene, unsurprisingly makes for some serious tonal whiplash in most cases where this happens.

If you're looking for a game with satisfying gameplay, rewarding side quests or impressive graphical fidelity, you're better off looking elsewhere. If on the other hand you're looking for a game in which the characters are charming and voice-acted fantastically, writing that will you make you laugh or maybe even shed a tear or two, and a story that is intriguing and full of mystery all the way from the beginning to the end, then Deadly Premonition is well worth your time.
