Archs provide incredibly support, often used in stone doorways and bridges. Japanese children have adapted to this design to keep them from falling over while being bullied. Japan's adults have done nothing to stop their kids from being ravaged by scraped knees and bruised thighs and knee high socks can only do so much, so children (through evolution) have gained natural defenses against being pushed down.
