I an enjoying this game SO MUCH.

It's an amazing mixture of crafting, survival, and narrative shooter that creates an immenely satisfying gameplay loop. After a quick tutorial, you quickly fall into a seemless cycle of narrative-driven exploration and progress-driven base-building. It doesn't matter whether you're just crafting so you can keep exploring, or you're only exploring to find better base materials. Each side of the game seems perfectly tuned to make sure neither one overstayes it's welcome, and neither one gets left behind.

It manages to scratch so many itches at once, I'm obsessed.

Slow. Boring. Broken. Jank.

The camera is awful, and somehow is EVEN WORSE when driving a car. You HAVE to spin your camera around in buildings, since there no smart wall fade. When you enter indoors, the ceiling disappears, but ANY walls between the camera and the character are just there and in the way. So many small things like this make it a crappy experience.

Item interactions with the world are awkward and impossible to determine naturally. Took me 10 minutes to figure out how to use a handsaw to turn logs into "wood".

Just play Zomboid instead.

This game is, at best, average. The main plot is incredibly milquetoast, and drags its feet like crazy. The only stand-out story was the side-quest to get the unforgivable curses.

The gameplay is competent, but I found myself dominating every single fight. On normal difficulty, even higher-level red-numbered "boss" enemies provide no challenge.

Technically this game ran like ass. I have a number of issues with it, on a machine that plays every other game in my library without issue. I'm running an RTX 2060-S.

I couldn't even play at 1920x1080 on Medium settings. This is honestly a first for me with this computer. In order to achieve ANY kind of reasonable frame-rate, I was forced to play at 720x576 upscaled. Even then, certain fights still turned into a slideshow unless I cranked some setting down further to Low, and once had to downscale to an even lower resolution.

I tried at one point to watch youtube on a second monitor while doing random world quests. It caused both the game AND the youtube video to stutter, drop frames, and full-on freeze. I've NEVER had a game impact other applications in just an aggressive and invasive way. It seems like this game was reaching outside of it's box into memory and resources it should not have had access to.

When exiting the game, it would not actually close the process behind the scenes. Steam would show the game as Running forever until I manually force-closed it.

All-in-all, it was a mediocre game that ran like ass. Wasted time well enough, but nowhere near worth the price tag.

Lovely, depressing, retro, beautiful.

The entire game is amazing and complicated despite the apparent simplicity. While it's music and graphics echo the old 8-bit styles, every tone and every pixel is used perfectly.

Praise the Sun!

Fantastically hard experience that offers little to no hand-holding both in and out of game. The PC port is full of issues resolved in round-about ways by community mods. If you don't go mad trying to get a resolution above 1024x720 (Tip: google DSFix), you'll wish you would have just bought a console instead when you try to get your mouse and keyboard to work (Tip: google DSMFix). After you wade through a SEA of options hidden away in .txt files, and troubleshoot a dozen additional problems you may encounter, you're finally off to the races!

Of course, the races are probably going to punch you right in the mouth because this game can be so hard the metaphors don't even make sense. The game doesn't tell you much, other players tell you even less, and you can throw yourself at an impossible cemetary of skeletons for hours without the game even suggesting there's an easier path. You need to learn from your deaths quickly. If you don't seem to be doing much damage, you're NOT going to survive so turn back and try another path!

Once you finally get on the slow, purposeful drudge to success, you'll meet all sorts of FANTASTICALLY designed monsters, see AMAZING set peices, and discover a deeply burried treasure-trove of lore.

Just keep in mind that if you want to experience the full effect of multiplayer, you have to stay human. You can always see the fleeting ghosts of other players, and you'll find their cryptic orange messages scrawled all over the world, but if you want to meet them in the flesh you have to be living yourself. Summon your white and golden allies whenever they offer to help. Be wary though, others may come as an agent of chaos, as your righteous executioner, a collector of souls, or even as a guardian of nature.

At least it's not using Games for Windows Live anymore!

Above all, PRAISE THE SUN.

Arma II is an interesting game in itself, but for the most part I have been enjoying a mod called DayZ. It transforms the game from a war sim into a zombie survival sim, complete with a great shifting atmosphere and terrifying PvP. It is a bit buggy though, so if you want your games polished to the point of perfection, it might annoy you.

It's a bit old, but the gameplay is fantastic and the concept of a cyberworld and cyber warfare along-side physical assault is really cool.
