This game is so wonderful already and so large! Despite being early access (miss u rad slimes) there is already so much to do and brings back a whole lot of what I love about the first Slime Rancher. The beginning was so easy to get into, as they lessened the amount of grind to unlock the basics, which I love because I prefer exploring over production.

I keep getting lost though, specifically with trying to leave areas, I can't find the entrance. There are so many tunnels and platforms and ways to go! Which is a good thing but also where am I

This game with all packs are almost $800 off-sale, and isn't much better on sale. Sail the seas for this one.

GET THIS PACK. STRAIGHT UP. This pack includes everything that should have been included in the base game and things that I thought were already base game until I looked it up????? God, just get this pack it is definitely worth your money.

This weirdly enough adds body hair customization (young adult+), nothing really special, just in case you were wanting that.

Generations reintroduced the memories system which is something I find essential to tracking my gameplay. Any time your sim does something noteworthy (first kiss, first day of work, being burglarized, etc.) it will be recorded in your sim's scrapbook. It's not the best, the pictures it takes are 9/10 pretty bad, but it functions as much as it needs. I mainly use this function exclusively for keeping track of my sim's life and what they've done and in what order, and can be especially good when you add a new sim from the world into your household.

This pack actually makes younger sims, particularly teens, more interesting to play. There's pranks they can pull, parties they can throw when their parents are out of the house (via opportunity), and can go through rebellious stages where their wishes and autonomy steer towards rebellious/mean-natured actions. Kids and teens can do after school activities (dance, scouts, drama club etc.) and can also be sent to several different boarding schools to level up different kinds of skills. Apparently they can also dream and get positive or negative moodlets from them? I don't pay attention to my kids.....

It also adds nice functional items, like canes and strollers for elders and toddlers respectively.

Similar to rebellious phases, adult sims can go through a mid-life crisis where they want to do extreme things like divorcing their spouse, getting tattoos, buying expensive cars etc. that you can't cancel if you promised them until the crisis is over. This lasts a quarter of the adult span.

You can also join a profession called Daycare which is what it sounds like. Toddlers will be dropped off typically on weekdays, and you have to keep them happy and their needs up; Scrolling over the child will tell you what they need and how badly. It's not very high-paying and it's pretty hard, but the better your report you can have a very good tip.

Additionally, the dating scene is greatly improved, especially since you can go on actual dates now. You can ask sims on dates, or if you're in a group with one other sim and you flirt with them it automatically turns into a date. Sims on the date will get date-related wishes (go to the movies, kiss, have a great date etc). Depending on what you do during the date depends on the outcome; Doing lots of romantic actions during a date can make it into a "Great date" which gives both sims positive moodlets, as opposed to a bad date which will give the "bad date" negative moodlet.

Sims can also ask their in-laws for their partner's hand in marriage, the response depending on the relationship with the sim asking (doesn't prevent you from marrying the sim if they say no). You can throw bachelor/bachelorette parties where your sim can invite all their friends and dancers will arrive; It's a normal party, but you can flirt with the dancers and have a sim perform a "best man" speech.

You can throw actual wedding ceremonies from the party menu! There are new wedding arches and a real wedding cake your sims can cut while everyone claps.

Other than all that, there's a new chemistry skill, more items for kids, a couple new woohoo spots, cloning and field trips. This is hands down the best expansion pack and is one I would 100% recommend adding, since multiple aspects of the games are drastically improved. It's also one of the least buggy packs as far as I can tell. If you are looking for one pack to buy, get this one.

This expansion makes me really sad, because it's so interesting, and has a lot of really cool mechanics like resorts and mermaids but it really just flopped really hard. I would recommend this pack only if you wanted to use mods that help the game run smoother, if you want pure vanilla, don't pick this up. At the bottom I'll give mod recs and a fix you can do if you decide to try (or maybe you already have it, and are just looking at reviews for fun).

(P.S if you have seasons, I'd recommend turning off winter/fall and snow for any households in Isla Paradiso)

The biggest flaw in this pack is that to use it to it's full potential, you NEED to be in it's world, Isla Paradiso; Since it was the very last pack added, Isla Paradiso is the ONLY world that has the dive spots you need to meet mermaids naturally in the world, without using lifetime rewards to just buy mermaidic kelp for 25,000 despite nearly every other world having beaches on the ocean. The world can be very laggy from the usable size and the sheer amount of things that are added into this pack.

Mermaids are cool, it are a little tedious/challenging to make your sim into a mermaid, and come with new consequences and abilities. FYI mermaids can walk on land, their legs will have scales and reflect the color of their tail. When your sim becomes a mermaid, hydration replaces their hygene which if they become dehydrated, they can die, but even when they are hydrated they need to swim in the ocean or else they'll turn back into a normal sim (there is a lifetime reward to prevent this). They also don't get much from normal food and require fish and kelp to raise their hunger. The main pro to being a mermaid is being able to stay under water indefinitely and swimming faster. Other than that, they can summon sharks if they are evil or mean-spirited to attack other sims. Other than that there's not a whole lot. Note that other occults (werewolves, genies, plantsims etc.) cannot also be mermaids without mods.

The resort system is very complicated, and I haven't explored it too much. Just know, they can be very very expensive and often don't pay back that money (there is one free resort for purchase called Hobart's Hideaway that you can use) and require finances (workers, food, pools and bedrooms). Your resort relies on reviews and stars; You can only gain or lose half a star per day, as well as gives you reviews, telling you what was or wasn't good about the resort. This system would actually be really really fun if Isla Paradiso wasn't a nightmare to live in (you can build resorts in any world, but there are only pre-built ones in Isla Paradiso which come with a few stars).

This pack also added a house foundation of stilts, making it easier to build houses off the beach, and there are many houses in the world built like this. One of my favorite parts of the pack is HOUSE BOATS which are literally houses that you build on the water, require a steering wheel somewhere on the lot, and you can go out on the water and dock them anywhere. It's a really fun idea, if again, wasn't ruined by the fact these can really only be done in Isla Paradiso.

Overall, everything about this pack is actually spectacular and super gameplay heavy (you actually have to work for your rewards, mermaids and 5-star hotels) but it just can't live up to it's full potential because the game just can't handle the amount of world there is. Isla Paradiso is a gorgeous and horrible world. There's a reason this pack is mostly negative, and it's for a good reason. If you are confident that you can get this pack to run ok, go for it, it's a really good pack.

I'd recommend "nraas errortrap" and "ellacharmed's IslaParadiso.world with Fixes" for mods to try and help. If these still aren't helping, or you don't want to mod your game, you can also delete several houses that seem to have routing problems: Icatcha, Scott, Los Amigos, and Medina. If there's still problems, you can delete The Romantic, and The Prince.

This is going to be a very in-depth review because I cannot say enough of how much I absolutely adore this installment of the franchise (I've 100% had more hours of the sims 3 than steam says, I used to have it on disk). I have The Sims 1 2 and 3 with all of the expansions, and 3 is the one I reach for the most when I'm looking for basic family/legacy gameplay. I'll just be mentioning mechanics seen in basegame, but I plan on writing reviews for the other expansions. However, if you must know, I consider Seasons and Generations as "essential expansions" which greatly improve basic gameplay.

I wanna start with real gameplay mechanics but wanted to address the "elephant in the room" open world and color wheel, which are both unique to TS3, not seen before the game and not since. I'll talk more on these issues near the end.

I'd also like to preface that I use and recommend installing nraas errortrap to significantly improve lagging/crashing/bugging. It doesn't prevent problems, but it can solve many of them.

tldr;
Your sims have notable personality, and interact with other sims accordingly, and wishes are also notably affected. Work, while being rabbit-holes, are complex and have different performance requirements depending on the career. The open world allows you to go and look anywhere, while being able to play with all your sims at once. The open world and color wheel make the game very slow however. The game is buggy to a fault, and is known to crash.

Sims are very very customizable with the help of the color wheel, allowing custom hair color (with 4 different slots for color customization,) eye color and clothing colors/patterns. The first in the series to allow different hair/makeup for each clothing category (updo for formal, ponytail for athletic). In basegame, the clothing categories are everyday, formal, sleepwear, swimwear and athletic.

With default 5 trait slots your sims can have really interesting personality, and react to sims with opposing traits and get negative moodlets around sims with opposing traits or anything that would effect that personality (good/evil sims, and "hates kids" around child-age or younger). A good majority of the traits add special interactions (childish allows YA sims to play with toys), change the significance (great kisser gives the other party a positive moodlet), or change the name of interactions (dare-devils take "EXTREME naps/showers/etc") and you can learn another sim's traits based on certain interactions (flirty/unflirty can be discovered simply by trying to flirt with them). Having 5 traits really lets you give your sims a good balance between positive and negative, and different categories (mental, physical, social and lifestyle). You aren't limited to just 5 though, as you can earn traits or trait slots by doing certain things in-game.

(Sims can also have favorite food, music and color, which give positive moodlets when utilized and can be used in conversation. Similarly, star signs only act as a conversation piece and don't mean much.)

Certain traits will also give 6 suggestions for lifetime wishes, which can be anywhere from being the highest level in a career/skill or "see ghost of wealthy spouse" but you can also choose any aspiration in the game if you want your natural cook to get rewarded from being an astronaut instead of a chef. This lifetime wish, along with traits, will dictate basic wishes that your sim will get throughout their life; things like buying certain objects, applying for certain jobs or becoming friends with certain sims. Completing wishes will give you points which you can spend to get all kinds of rewards, some give you unique objects and others can make certain kinds of actions always succeed (I don't usually buy these but I definitely get the appeal).

There are a few basic careers, all of them with different hours and pay. Unfortunately, a large amount of the careers are what's called "rabbit-holes" which basically just means they disappear into the appropriate building for several hours and come out with simoleons and job performance (Active careers were added in the Ambitions expansion). While you are at work you can open a drop-down in the top left to do several things (work as usual, work hard, suck up to boss, etc) to minimally improve several different aspects. Some careers have separate "branches" (music has rock or symphonic branches) which effect what you need to do to get promotions. Every career and level requires different skills (culinary requiring high cooking skill, and military needing high athletic), having a decent mood, neutral or higher relationship with boss and coworkers (who are real sims in the world you can talk to, and are added to your relationship panel) that help improve job performance.

Sometimes "opportunities" can pop up, which are often related to work or school, but can be anything really (could be reading a book, or eating somewhere). Every opportunity has different rewards (simoleons, job performance, or improved relationship are common rewards) depending on what it wants your sim to do. Not accepting the opportunity doesn't negatively effect gameplay.

NOW I will talk about the open world, with it's pros and cons. The open world is admittedly very good, letting you look around at any part of the world without your sims needing to be there. Unless you are going into a different world added with expansions (the future, university or a different country) you can control multiple sims in different places at once (one sim can be at home, while another can be at the park). I am personally of the opinion that the open world isn't necessary, and a lot of the stuff in basegame isn't too interesting and expansions definitely improve this aspect.

The BIGGEST problem with the open world is that you can't utilize it very well, and it takes up a lot trying to keep everything loaded at once, and is the main reason I recommend nraas errortrap, as it fixes broken sims and too many cars (it always removes 70+ cars every night it's insane). The world and other sims will always be partially loaded, and doing something so when you go somewhere is can decide based on your graphics card how many sims can go there. No matter how nice and new your computer is, this game will without fail, be slow in some aspect.

The color wheel is similarly flawed. The color wheel is fantastic, as you can mix and match to your heart's content; No wood has to be mismatched, your rooms can truly be all one color, your sims can have ombre hair on every hairstyle. But opening the color wheel is so so slow and scary. The color wheel opens up on whatever category of texture the item is (metal, wood etc.) and depending on what the category is, it may take a few seconds to open. In CAS it's not too bad, but in build/buy it can be very stressful since it has to load the whole house as well as a lot of the world. I often don't use it to it's full potential, but it is nice to match the dresser to the bedframe if it isn't a default option.

The game is infamously the laggiest and buggiest out of the series, which is saying a lot since all of the sims are buggy. My game, with all expansions and heavily modded takes about 11 minutes to load into a household, and it used to have a lot of trouble just launching until I did a full reinstall. Common bugs I have to deal with are my sims getting confused with an action and walking to the sidewalk instead, as well as the game mixing up which floor they're actually on and will make them walk through the floor and go back upstairs when they finish an action. I have no explanation for these bugs, but they're pretty minor. My game rarely crashes, but it has happened before, and is usually caused by bugged work uniforms somewhere in the world.

I adore this game with all my heart, but cannot ignore the significant flaws it has. And being ugly is not a flaw, the graphics aren't even that bad. >:(

Keep in mind this game is in early access; however, you can access the beta that gets very VERY frequent updates! I currently keep my game on beta nonVR, and it's extremely stable.

If you like horror games but you are a coward with some ballsy friends I would STRONGLY recommend this! Even if you aren't the coward and you're the ballsy friend, it's still a lot of fun.
You bring all your items in, fervently ask while holding EMF/Spirit Box/UV light "how old are you/where are you/are you here/how old are you" over and over again until one of the player screams because the ghost said E on the spirit box. Then when you know where it is, you bring everything into the room you think it's in, and while you're putting the camera down the ghost will start hunting because SOMEONE (me) forgot BOTH crucifixes in the truck and you try to run from the ghost but it's a revenant so it kills you in like 5 minutes while everyone outside is either screaming, or just chatting about random ♥♥♥♥. But now you're dead, and can throw basketballs and mugs at your ♥♥♥♥♥♥ friends while they look at the truck computer for orbs.
It's generally not super scary in non-VR, though I can't speak for VR since I'm too broke for a headset. When you first start playing it can seem very very very scary and you'll probably be in the truck for your first few months of games like a coward because you bought all your stuff.

I don't know what's happening, but I can play as an anime girl so I guess it's fine.

Good beginner FPS and also a fallback game for your group of 4-8 friends!
