This game is like a mix of my two favorite childhood games: Shining Force and Age of Empires. I love it!

I've been waiting for this game to release for a looong time and following it's development has been a lot of fun. Now that it's finally here I can happily say that it's lived up to my expectations.

• P R E S E N T A T I O N :

Death's Gambit has a great sense of wonder, progress, and exploration while capturing beautifully vibrant visuals. Each new area I found myself in was a joy to look at, and you can really tell a lot of work went into even the smallest details to really bring the world to life. Add that to quality voice acting and character designs, and you've got a very pretty game.

My only gripe is that some animations simply skew / rotate pixel assets as opposed to having each frame drawn pixel sharp. While such animations are a rare occurrence, I feel it contradicts all the effort put into the vast majority of frame by frame animations that are in the game.

• C O M B A T :

There are seven classes to choose from to match your play style. I chose the Blood Knight, which rewards aggressive combat and quick movement and attacks. Getting close and personal to enemies while slashing away with my axe was lots of fun. The enemies all offer unique attacks and keep the combat interesting and unique. I've read reviews stating how they found the combat clunky and unresponsive. I couldn't agree less, though. The combat strikes me as a nice blend between Salt and Sanctuary and Dead Cells.

• V E R D I C T

While it may have a few bugs at this state, the developers are diligently reading feedback and working to patch bugs. I've only experience one issue where the game crashed and deleted my save file, but that's also an issue they're working to fix. I think this is a great addition to the 2D dark souls-esque combat genre and is a great purchase for anyone who likes games like Salt and Sanctuary and Dead Cells, or just wants to ogle at amazing pixel art.

Wtf? From the trailers and visual direction this game looks great, and I thought I was going to love it during the opening interactions. But then you get to the meat of the game by entering a randomly generated mine to fight enemies and everything changes.

  • The enemies I encountered didn't have any fighting animations, they just bump into you.

  • Some take more than two hits but they have no knockback animation so you have to get super close to them, swing, and then dash back instantly because they'll just keep walking into you.

  • The first boss I ran into didn't even move, he just sat there and had two special fighting animations.

  • The NPCs you can save are in comedic cages with levers, all of them...

  • The platforming felt jank and I kept trying to jump again before actually landing on a platform because the animation is weird and makes it feel like you landed before you actually did.

  • There seem to be a lot of pixel precise jumps, especially around annoying enemies that crawl around the entire platform.

  • The music is repetitive.

  • The combat and enemies are repetitive. The combat allows for no stratagic approaches, just get close, swing, dash back, or if its a flying enemy jump and slash.

  • The enemies dont seem varied at all, I fought the same goblin like 15 times at the start before seeing new enemies.

  • The scenery in the mine is very samey.

  • Your character sprite has a weird motion blur that you cant turn off.

  • The combat and movement felt sluggish.

It was like a mix of dead cells and rogue legacy but 10 times worse...

Also, wtf?

A charming precision platformer hindered by clunky movement. I love pixel art and I love difficult precision platformers such as SMB and They Bleed Pixels, but the tanky feeling movement really ruined this game for me.

I love everything about this game except the incredibly boring and clumsy combat, which is an issue considering that's the main focus of the game. Your only options for melee are jumping and pressing x to swing - how fun...

This game isn't bad, it just isn't very good either. Mediocre platforming mixed with dull combat. Even the pixel art tries to replicate NES color palettes which makes it seem they were trying to appeal to nostalgia rather than going with detailed and colorful pixel art. The boss designs and character dialogue were the only thing I was impressed by.

This game sucks, nice pixel art is about all it has going for it. After about 30 minutes I had to stop playing. The gun auto-aims which makes combat very boring, the dialogue is drawn out and confusing, and the whole idea behind the game seemed to be find a place to use your wrench so you can unlock a door which leads to more places to use your wrench and more doors to unlock.
