I would avoid purchasing this version of the game, this edition has aged very poorly and the gameplay is extremely awkward and clunky. The Definitive Edition includes several playability updates that should've been included in this version, as well as additional features and content. Unfortunately the HD Edition was initially the only version available on Steam.

AOE2:HD and AOE2:DE are offered as a bundle by Steam but they aren't multiplayer compatible, which means that you and your friends will have to buy the same edition in order to play with each other. As others have explained, HD works with P2P-Multiplayer while DE works with server based multiplayer. One also isn't a DLC of the other, you'd simply be buying the same game twice. It's up to you however to decide which one is worth it, if your friends play this edition buy it, if they play the Definitive Edition and you're looking for a decent single-player experience I'd highly recommend buying that version instead.

That being said, I'd fully recommend the game itself for both single-player and multi-player experiences. The campaigns, voice acting, design, writing, ect. make this one of the best strategy games available, and in terms of quality it hasn't aged a day.

Just be mindful of what you're getting with the HD Edition, you're sacrificing higher quality graphics, more civilizations and content, interface improvements, improved AI, less painful micro-managing, continued support, patching, updates, ect.
