Yep. That part of the game is very exacting. You need to finish the boss fight without taking any damage (and being full health) in order to do all the things. And it is not a simple 'scrap growth off and run' solution. You need to actually shoot things

There is a machine that give enough health pods to finish the game near the 2nd hand's machines.
