Were there any "good guy" rat characters?
My brother and I were chatting about potential hero characters while playing a bit of VT2. In Mordheim & Bloodbowl, he's always had a preference for playing as the rats. So we were wondering if there were any non-evil rat dramatis personae in the Warhammer universe that could be the basis for a highly unlikely but potential new character in the franchise. Thanks!

I think the only way this would be possible is if it were somehow raised from birth by a different, more tolerant race. Skaven society forces their people to do dirty deeds or end up dead.

There are no good skaven. Their god, the horned Rat, made them specifically to how they are and makes sure the ratboys stay that way. As far as gods go, the horned Rat is one of the, if not the most "hands on" god when it comes to direct action in the material world.
Even orks can somewhat be reasoned with, or a least payed of, sometimes. There are ork mercenary bands, who fight for the empire every now and then.
Skaven want everyone other than them killed or enslaved. By them. So they can eat everyone else.

No, none at all. The only ones remotely coming close to reasonable are the undead crew serving in Nyklaus von Carstein's armada.
the skaven are a bunch of oiley, libertarian sleazebags that assume everyone is going to try to cheat them so they have to cheat first and hardest. Rasknitt actually IS a "good" skaven, because he's not using plans that would result in his minions dying if they worked or instantly betraying them to the council for treason with their alliance with the nurglites for a quick boost in personal respect.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! I'm definitely going on a WH lore binge while quarantined, it's so dense and rich.

Wasn't there canonical a joke character named ratacus or something who started a rebellion against the Skaven? It didn't last very long because they turned on him if i remember right. but still.

His name is Skabbicus and he was the leader of Clan Jamcreermin. Unfortunately as far as I am aware the only mention of him and his Clan is in 1d4chan (the wiki of 4chan's traditional games board) since there's no mention of him in all the other warhammer wikis and 1d4chan doesn't have sources. So either this is a funmade faction that someone is trying to disguise as canon or some very abscure piece of lore.

Edit: The censored part is the chan image board that shall not be named.

Why would steam censor 4chins of all the places? Yeah, I get that its NSFW boards are half trаnny/poo/gore, but it's far from the cesspits like r*ddit or t*mblr.

it's an inset ficlet in the 7th-8th edition skaven armybook. the wikis are actually garbage for that and tend to treat them as non-canon while accepting novels that are openly noncanon as fact.

Well the dead ones are good enough I suppose.

The only time the Skaven did something "good" for the world was probably their involvement in the death of Nagash, preventing him from turning the entire Warhammer world into a world of undeath.

https://warhammerfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Nagash#The_Death_of_Nagash

That said though, they probably did it more in a "saving their own tail" kind of way, than out of the goodness of their own hearts. The Horned Rat would have been rather upset if someone else has taken over the world they so crave for their own.

P.S. Sorry for necroing this post, but Necromancy is a bit of a passion of mine.

Yea... no.

The only good skaven is a dead skaven so let's make some Skaven GOOD!

Their society is "survival of the fittest, YOU are the fittest, and you are chosen by the great horned rat but all these others are in your way so you need to scheme and plot to become the best" and that leads to a very selfish and greedy race of psychopaths all constantly backstabbing their way to the top.

If, however, you would like to see what a Skaven who saw the light of Sigmar would be like, go watch "the best d*** soulbound show" on YT:

Episode 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlQNx54zU0Q

Episode the rest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T44BwLPK994&t=6s

A fun new campaign set in the new Soulbound AoS book.

I think in Gotrek and Felix (First Omnibus) in th seige of Nuln, possible spoiler one of Thanquol(a skaven lord)'s underlings gives away some plans to the defenders. There was something about the rival leaders scaring him. I can't remember if he was scared for his own life, threteaned, or ashamed of the massacre but he did it. He was killed though so not possible.

EDIT: I'm in the middle of reading it and have a weirdly specific memory so that's why I rememebr it
