For MacOS users who can't launch the game
32-bit users should use the 1.4.3.2 version
You can install our last 32-bit compatible version by right-clicking Hollow Knight in your Steam library, click Properties, Betas, and select 1.4.3.2.

OS Error 4294956470
Running the follow command in a Terminal should fix this (assumes the default Steam library location):
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -f $HOME/Library/Application\ Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Hollow\ Knight/hollow_knight.app
You may need to run this again if switching to or from the 1.4.3.2 branch.

I did that, but the game works strange, crash, next reopen, and exit STEAM but the game still working but without STEAM CLIENT not controller not achievements not nothing.

Looks a UNITY problem, I suppose.

my recommendation is return to the last version, forget the update, because after the update, I can't play normal, I need tricks to start, but I can't maintain STEAM CLIENT working because close (very strange).

32-bit users should use the 1.4.3.2 version

You can install our last 32-bit compatible version by right-clicking Hollow Knight in your Steam library, click Properties, Betas, and select 1.4.3.2.

Uninstalling/Reinstalling

Uninstall the game, and then clear the download cache by opening Preferences > Downloads and then clicking "CLEAR DOWNLOAD CACHE". Then try reinstalling the game (but select the 1.4.3.2 beta first if you're using it!)

Manually edit the game files

This one is a bit technical, but it should work for now:
  1. Right-click Hollow Knight in your steam Library, select Manage > Browse local files
  2. Right click hollow_knight.app and select Show Package Contents
  3. Open Contents>MacOS and find a file called either "hollow_knight" or "Hollow Knight"
  4. If the file is currently called "hollow_knight", rename it to "Hollow Knight" and vice versa
  5. Move back up to the Contents folder and open Info.plist in a text editor
  6. Find the key "CFBundleExecutable" and change the name between the <string> tags below it to match the new name of the file you renamed inside the MacOS folder

I try all that, and... nothing

I did all steps and nothing... the beta version, only works 2 times, later of that? nothing, worse

I'm 90% of the game, I want to complete, but how? if I can't launch

There is a current Steam issue - other Mac users have posted that none of their games launch. The issue was in a beta a couple of weeks ago or so, wasn't identified and then got pushed to the stable Steam client (June 7).
Valve has recently updated the Steam beta client (June 8) with a fix for launching games on macOS 10.12.

As always, nice research info, tintingaroo. 👍

MacOS users then can try to opt-in for the Steam Beta and see if it helped with Hollow Knight:

(this can be easily reversed, so no worries)

Thanks rez (also for the what to do & 'how to' link - I forgot that part...) ;)
And a mention for the so called "IT Inept from California" 32BitStew for troubleshooting and figuring out the exact issue + a solution o7. *wipes away a tear*

xD

WHERE IS SILK SONG?

I HATE HAVE TO DO THIS JUST FOR THE UPDATE. I bought the game a long time ago and now I can't play it because of this update, I have 10.12 and the store still says that it supports it, I don't know maybe they should return my money ... this feels like a scam
The solution is all well and good, it allows the game to launch, but it's a little hard to play with a black screen... :zote:

You may have success by enabling or disabling fullscreen. It should be possible by changing it in the preferences file but launch commands via Steam are the way others have done so.
Here's a post with instructions on that method: https://node2.projectplanet.cn/@steamcommunity.com/app/367520/discussions/0/3109152828492524244/#c3109152828492655795
See how that goes.

No dice, black screen persists. I can use f3 and the mouse to enter and exit fullscreen pretty easily anyway, though I tried the launch options method.

Maybe the way 32BitStew got it working from that same discussion will work for you.

Unfortunately not, I've tried that method before and still can't get it working, though I don't see how it would fix the black screen anyway.

Please get this working, I was banking on playing this over the weekend to decompress from a ♥♥♥♥ week :(
