Pre-Review after ~6h.

The game itself is pretty nice. I like the collectables and the graphics. Everything is worked out very well. Even the "matchmaking" seems to work fine. You can start a game by joining and switch to AI support if nobody can be found.

That is also the negative about that game. The number of players I found during the 6h playtime: 4-5 people. So basically I am playing this game in solo with AI bots on easy. I think on greater difficulties it is impossible to win with bots. But else the bots are doing pretty well.

It is a shame that nobody plays this anymore (or at least it seems to be this way to me). I will continue the campaign and see further. By the way: I don't think you can play this with a controller ...

This game is pretty good but it needs more content and more updates and maybe some new game modes. Overall its a solid 8/10

Developed by Cold Iron Studios who aren't know for anything. This is their first game. Aliens: Fireteam Elite is an third person cooperative shooter in the same vein of Left 4 Dead except minus one. Three players (or one player and two NPC controlled friendlies on solo). Blast your way through 12 levels (15 levels if you get the Pathogen DLC). The game is split into chapters. Each chapter containing three levels. Most levels take place in enclosed locations but there are few that take you outside.

The main enemy is of course Xenomorphs but there are also Synths in the later levels. The Xenomorphs are split into three groups. You have your weak enemies like the drone Xenos and facehuggers. You have your strong enemies that includes exploding Xenos, spitter Xenos, and Prowler Xenos (the Hunters from L4D). Lastly you have your brute enemies that are giant aggressive Xenos. The best way to put them is they're the Tanks but slightly weaker. Your Synths enemies are just melee based and gun based.

Your character is custom but the options are very limited in terms of creativity. You have several classes to choose from. Gunner (soldier). Demolisher (Crowd control and big guns). Technician (Support that includes a sentry gun that can be deployed). Doc (Medic). Recon (Another support class but uses a drone that can be customized). Phalanx (Tank class that uses a riot shield and aggros most enemies). Lancer (the Demolisher class but more about defensive than offense). You can choose and pick any class during any time in the game. You can even have a character who is good at every class. If playing with a full party you assume your chosen role. If you play solo the two bots don't use classes they're just your standard gunners. You have skills for each respective classes. All classes are also only limited to certain weapons in their arsenal.

Now if you think the two bots are brain dead, you'd be correct. However there is a mod, Improved Human Bots - Higher Difficulty Balancing by GPUnity, that makes the bots deadly and can withstand the enemies on the higher difficulties. Kind of the like the mods on the Steam Workshop for L4D2 that makes the bots actually good. I would go with that mod if you plan to play solo. The game also recognizes when you're using mods and prevents online play only. The developer is still cool with you modding the game. There are a few other mods by GPUnity that enhance the solo experience.

After each level you are brought back to a hub location. You can buy new guns, gun skins, cosmetics for your characters, and talk to NPCs that you will be communicating with through the whole game. Pretty standard for a hub area. The story is basic and simple. No real cutscenes and all information is given through your comms through levels. You can also talk to NPCs in the hub to flesh things out. This also includes collectibles. There are a total of 39 data logs (48 with the Pathogen DLC) you can find throughout the game. These logs can also open discussions with NPCs back on the hub.

For achievement hunters it is a moderately long 100% to obtain but its not impossible. All of the achievements can be obtained through solo play. As for the Pathogen DLC it's more of the same from the base game. Just a new location and enemy varieties but still worth a play. You can get the complete game on sale for $12.
