Crashing ( Possible solution for some )
Hello steam community,

I love HZD, but recently I decided to create a whole new build because my PSU went bad in my old one. Aside from that, I noticed that my newer build, despite having the latest hardware, is experiencing issues. I've also seen reports from other players experiencing crashes. Personally, I would get into the main menu and attempt to "Continue," only to have my brand new PC crash. It's worth noting that nothing is overclocked. I ran some tests, and all of my hardware comes back clean, as it should, I'd hope! All other games I have encountered no issues with lag or crashing, only HZD. Here is the solution I have found, as someone suggested, which will be below. Side note, I have closed and reloaded the game five times with success for further testing purposes of course, and via fast travel just in case. The only thing I notice is that loading times, like fast travel or entering the game, are slower due to this solution ( possibly ), but hey, at least you can play now, I hope. My old build had no problems, with an RTX 2060 and Windows 10 as the OS. I'm not sure if it has something to do with Windows 11 or my hardware in my new build. It seems to be working now.

The solution :

Find the .exe of HZD and right click the application.
Select Properties.
Go to Compatibility tab.
Click the check mark for 'Run this program in compatibility mode for'
Should already have populated Windows 8
-- I also personally checked "Run as administrator" for each time too.

Shout out to the steam community players that found this solution, as I now can play again. I hope this helps some of you or all.

Final update : As expected, the game is running beautifully as it should. Please let me know if this resolves your HZD issue of crashing.

Just for some background information on my builds in question.

My old build :

GPU : Rtx 2060
Storage : M.2 evo 500 gb
CPU : Intel Core i7-13700F
Ram : DDR4 32 gb
OS : Windows 10

New build :

GPU : Rtx 4070 TI Super
Storage : m.2 Pro 990 2 TB
CPU : Intel Core i9-14900K
Ram : DDR5 64 gb
OS : Windows 11

Just wanted to inform people that I build my PCs and never go pre-built. Games ran smoothly before, and still do, even faster with my new build; as expected. Not entirely sure if it's an OS issue on Windows 11's end. This was only with HZD as I noted in my posts above again. Never had any issues in my entire life when it came to any sort of pc game, to be honest.

Another side note : Always keep your system up to date with the latest graphics update of course.

If you are still having issues after adjusting the mode from properties as I suggested. Please describe what happens exactly like I did, for example, I was able to get to the main screen, but when loading in from "Continue" about 25% of the way, it would freeze my pc entirely or crash HZD. Also, please drop your pc specs of course and if it's custom built or pre-built.

I was able to resolve this issue by doing the following steps. on the game icon, right-click and then properties, in the window that opens, click on compatibility and select run this program in compatibility mode and choose windows 8, also select below the option to run this program as administrator, the next step is open the nvidia control panel and click on manage 3d settings and in the maximum frame rate option set 60fps so the game always runs at 60fps. I did a lot of research and found a report that said that Horizon Zero Dawn on PC had a corrupted file that crashed the game above 60fps, after I set the game to 60fps I was able to play fine, for me it worked and I hope it works for everyone.

I had the same issue on HZD Complete Edition and I resolved it by doing the following:

- Right-click on file HorizonZeroDawn.exe select Properties and on tab Compatibility select Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 8
- Tick on Run this program as administrator
- Click OK

PC specs:
Intel Core i9-14900KF
32GB DDR5
GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16GB OC
Samsung 990 Pro 2TB M.2 NVMe PCI Express 4.0
Windows 11
