I think the best advice is, download and do the free stuff and find out what YOU think, The Shadowkeep and Beyond Light campaigns are free to play and should give you enough to find out what you think.
Some like the New Light bit, because it kind of hold your hand to teach how things work, some don't, but there is an option fairly early to skip it. It can be a bore, but I recommend playing through it once to understand some of the mechanics of the game
Keep watch for sales if you like it, no point in not saving money if you can.
Prepare for a fantastic 'shooter experience', second to none (except perhaps Warframe) and a tsunami of confusion both with the story and the game's mechanics and systems. It is worth pushing through though as the pew pew is far better than Borderlands or Halo, imo.
